Does 6th Gen iPod Nano need the Nike + Sports Kit?

I have the Nike+ sensor with my Sports Band. To use it with the new 6th Gen Nano, do I have to get the sports kit? Or is this feature built in like the iPhone 3GS and 4? The attachment to the new nano will make the form factor ugly.

This was the very first question I had about the new nano. After digging several layers on the Apple site regarding Nike+ you will eventually get to to an area where it does clarify that you will still need the receiver. I was also hoping it would be built in like it is on the iphone. But for me, I'm upgrading from a 1st gen nano, so not having to use an armband and now being able to use the HRM is more than enough for me to justify the upgrade anyway.

Hi toffeepup,

As cocon said, you will need the receiver. Here are some of the references...

Based on the iPod nano Specifications page it looks like you will need the Nike + iPod Sport Kit (with the receiver) for the new nano.

From the bottom of that page, under "Which iPod are you?" it says, "Nike + iPod support".
Compare that to the iPod touch which says, " Nike + iPod support built in".

Also, from Rock and Run
"Then connect the receiver to your iPod nano. iPod touch, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 include built-in support for Nike + iPod, so no receiver is necessary."

Note it does have a built in pedometer, and based on the Features page you can upload that to the Nike+ website. Not sure if that's enough for you.

Yes. It needs the Receiver/Sensor combination. I ran with it yesterday. I, too, was hoping it wouldn't need it, but, alas. When you plug the receiver into the bottom connector of the Nano, the Nike + App appears in the Fitness section.
Now, I can see, in the future, if they keep this design, the inclusion of GPS, to really take this to the next level 'cause this thing looks so much like a watch...

found out the hard way. I specifically bought this thing as it looked like the perfect running mp3 w Nike + built in. In fact, when I saw how many features were dropped between the 5th and 6th generation nano, I thought it was engineered for the sole reason of keeping it small for running, working out etc. When I was looking at it in the store, I specifically asked if the sensor was built in and was told "yes" AND bought the shoe sensor alone and AT THE SAME TIME because I (and the sales person) believed it was built in. Well....its not and the thing loses its form factor with this piece of plastic tagged onto it.

Yes it needs the receiver. Very disappointed as I did too little research and trusted employees at the apple store when told HR would be picked up by the nano 6th generation. Not true. Now a christmas gift is 2/3 complete and I have to buy the receiver.

Why would the receiver not be built into the nano itself??????? Bought it specifically for running and am now forced to make it bulkier because why????????

It should be clearly labelled on not only the nano, but the polar nike plus wear link that the receiver is needed for nano devices. Poorly done.

Does 6th Gen iPod Nano need the Nike + Sports Kit?
