Trouble with iTunes shared servers on NAS drives

All of the music for our house is stored on a LaCie NAS device with an embedded iTunes server. Open iTunes, click the server in the SHARED section of the sources list, wait for the library to load, and play. This system worked very well with iTunes 9.2.1 (and earlier).

There's an issue, though, when trying to do this with iTunes 10.

Now, the server's name doesn't appear in the SHARED section of the sources list. Instead, it reads "untitled playlist." When we click this, it appears to load the library from the server, and does display the server's name with the progress in the top window. But when it's finished the list of songs is blank.

I've tried restarting the computer and rebuilding it's permissions. Relaunching iTunes and rebuilding its preferences. Restarting the iTunes server on the NAS device and rebuilding its library. I've even tried with the embedded iTunes server on a second (and much newer) LaCie NAS device. All to no avail.

iTunes 10 does, however, recognize and load iTunes shared libraries from other MacBooks in the house. But not the embedded iTunes servers in the NAS devices.

I suppose I could rollback to iTunes 9.2.1. But a solution that also involves iTunes 10 would be great. Anyone have any ideas?

(I will, of course, also mention this to the people at LaCie to see if they have any suggestions.)

Thought I would add an update from me, and I'm not sure if this will be helpful or just cheese people off. I had bought the Zyxel NSA 310, and was having all sorts of problems connecting it as a shared drive on Itunes - all the previous problems documented above, until I backloaded Itunes 9 - which was just ridiculous. I have 4 computers/netbooks to be networked in, and there was no way I was having a half-cocked job by backloading them all into Itunes 9!!! I tried to get help from Zyxel, and from the retailer, and both quite frankly, were sadly lacking in any reply.

Anyway, the retailer (eventually) agreed to take the goods back for a refund - having no doubt researched it themselves. I have since done loads of research looking for a Network solution for Itunes - this was my primary motive after all, for networking - along with shared photo's, streaming stuff to TV's, and a couple of other things I dared not to mention 😉.

Rather than going for a full NAS set up, my research led me to the Western Digital "My Book Live". I took the 3TB off the shelf, leaving me plenty of storage room to do my thang. But, the simple matter is that I do not require (at this stage) a full NAS set up.

So, this thing took 20 minutes to install. I went straight to the WD website to get the latest firmware, as in there was a prescribed solution for Itunes 10.5. And hey presto, the bloody thing has worked. All my computers / netbooks now have access into the 'Itunes Server', and can stream music round the house at the press of a button. I can also access the WD from anywhere in the world on my Smartphone - which is pretty slick.

To say I am bloody delighted after 6 weeks of torture is an under-statement.

A couple of downsides I see thus far - the need to carry out a seperate back up, as this is a single drive. Also, it does not easily take any Network Printers, so my router is taking the heat on that.

But it has a Gigabit Ethernet making transfer pretty slick if you have the right connection set up. And ultimately ... it just works.

Thanks all who helped me through this.

Cheers

Neil.

Being a developer of an iTunes Music server (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.dyndns.jkiddo) myself, I seem to recall that Apple changed the underlying DAAP protocol in iTunes v10.5. This means that any 3. party supplier such as myself, LaCie, Western Digital or the people behind mt-daapd has to adopt this change. If the change is not implemented, the functionality will stop working

I recently updated iTunes (Windows) to version 10.6.0.40 and now it works with the "iTunes Server" feature of my NetGear DNS-323. With 10.5 iTunes would briefly flash the contents of my "nas" under "SHARED" but then the focus would switch back to "LIBRARY->Music". Now with 10.6.0.40 the focus will stay on my "nas" under "SHARED" and I can play music through this share. FYI, my DNS-323 is running v1.10 firmware.

Problem Solved!

I recently bought a LG N1A1 NAS and fought this issue for months. I finally found this bulletin board a couple of days ago .... all of you have been a huge help.

Like several of you, with multiple PC's, Laptops and iTunes devices I was not thrilled with the idea of reverting back to iTunes v9, or any other earlier version for that matter, I dug a little deeper into the NAS.

The N1A1 model that I bought came with firmware version # 6674. After updating the firmware to version # 9595 yesterday afternoon, all seems to be running sooth on iTunes v10.6.0.40.

I have a dlink dns-323 nas (firmware 1.10) and I enabled the itunes server on the nas. the nas is connected to the wireless router using the switch in the wireless router itself.

I run the latest version of itunes (10.6) on a PC with win7 premium 64bit. If I connect the pc to the switch using an ethernet cable, my nas appear in itunes. However, once I unplug the ethernet cable and connect to the nas wirelessly, the na disappear from iTunes. I can still access the nas on windows explorer though so the pc is still connected to the nas.

I have no idea why this happens. Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.
