Trouble with iTunes shared servers on NAS drives

All of the music for our house is stored on a LaCie NAS device with an embedded iTunes server. Open iTunes, click the server in the SHARED section of the sources list, wait for the library to load, and play. This system worked very well with iTunes 9.2.1 (and earlier).

There's an issue, though, when trying to do this with iTunes 10.

Now, the server's name doesn't appear in the SHARED section of the sources list. Instead, it reads "untitled playlist." When we click this, it appears to load the library from the server, and does display the server's name with the progress in the top window. But when it's finished the list of songs is blank.

I've tried restarting the computer and rebuilding it's permissions. Relaunching iTunes and rebuilding its preferences. Restarting the iTunes server on the NAS device and rebuilding its library. I've even tried with the embedded iTunes server on a second (and much newer) LaCie NAS device. All to no avail.

iTunes 10 does, however, recognize and load iTunes shared libraries from other MacBooks in the house. But not the embedded iTunes servers in the NAS devices.

I suppose I could rollback to iTunes 9.2.1. But a solution that also involves iTunes 10 would be great. Anyone have any ideas?

(I will, of course, also mention this to the people at LaCie to see if they have any suggestions.)

The same old problem with smb shares exists in v10.0.1. Nothing has changed for me. It is still not possible to launch iTunes in a normal way - spinning wheel comes up and on the NAS side the smb daemon runs on it's limits.

But now... we have Ping. What an enhancement. Slowly i am getting tired with this issue, and more disappointed about the fact that Apple doesn't seem to care about this.

Going back to 9.2.1.

I'm on a D-Link NAS 323 and iTunes 10 during installation blew up my playlist. I had to redo the playlist and it was awfully slow. took me a week to update my 27k worth of songs after the update, took another 2 weeks to determine the gapless playback with spinning rainbow to add to the pain.

That aside. I sure do hope that Apple can fix this issue as updating with a new songs or even downloading an app/sync for my iphone takes 15-30 mins where it would normally be only a few minutes..

I do really hope there will be a fix in 10.1.. *crosses fingers*

Well. I downloaded the latest itunes 10.0.1(22) and I still cannot see my NAS shared folder that I used to see with itune 9.2. It is just not there anymore.

Downgraded to 9.2., and everything works back to normal. So I don't see my problem solved yet with this latest itunes release. My NAS is Buffalo Linkstation LS-WXL/R1.

Must I remain in 9.2 all the time? I have put up this issue at Buffalo Techsupport forum. It seems that the general conclusion is itunes has changed 'something'. If the NAS works with itunes 9.2, and not 10, it only makes sense to conclude that Apple is the one that needs to fix this.

i'm still experiencing problems syncing my iphones with songs from an Windows 2008 R2 file server ever since upgrading to iTunes 10.x

i'm sure apple has done nothing wrong (as always, its never Apple to blame) so could somebody please tell Microsoft to make their very own SMB protocol Apple compatible again? thank you so much.

in the meantime i can't listen to songs i bought on iTunes because its just not possible to copy them to my iPhone without iTunes freezing, and no, i won't move my songs off my fileserver just because crapple screwed up.

Bob, what kind of NAS do you have? On my LG, for example, I need to go into the web interface and click "Apply" on the iTunes tab so that a manual update refreshes what displays in the shared library. I am assuming your NAS has a similar functionality.

If nothing else, turning the iTunes service off and back on would refresh the shared listing, I should think...

right, even with 10.1 still same issues, poor performance, slow start scanning NAS (for what?) but ping is everywhere. I was installing XP in Bootcamp and guess what, 10.1 is working very well even on my NAS. no ****. rofl Isn't this embarrassing?

OT: I though to get myself an iPhone 4 but without iTunes 10 I obviously can't, because of iOS. Then I get something else. Never mind Apple, it's just one customer less, that shouldn't bother you that much.
