Trouble with iTunes shared servers on NAS drives

All of the music for our house is stored on a LaCie NAS device with an embedded iTunes server. Open iTunes, click the server in the SHARED section of the sources list, wait for the library to load, and play. This system worked very well with iTunes 9.2.1 (and earlier).

There's an issue, though, when trying to do this with iTunes 10.

Now, the server's name doesn't appear in the SHARED section of the sources list. Instead, it reads "untitled playlist." When we click this, it appears to load the library from the server, and does display the server's name with the progress in the top window. But when it's finished the list of songs is blank.

I've tried restarting the computer and rebuilding it's permissions. Relaunching iTunes and rebuilding its preferences. Restarting the iTunes server on the NAS device and rebuilding its library. I've even tried with the embedded iTunes server on a second (and much newer) LaCie NAS device. All to no avail.

iTunes 10 does, however, recognize and load iTunes shared libraries from other MacBooks in the house. But not the embedded iTunes servers in the NAS devices.

I suppose I could rollback to iTunes 9.2.1. But a solution that also involves iTunes 10 would be great. Anyone have any ideas?

(I will, of course, also mention this to the people at LaCie to see if they have any suggestions.)

Ok folks I hope this helps someone with Windows 7 and the latest iTunes. Today after much frustration with my NAS, iTunes library and Windows 7 x64 install, I finally did what I was too lazy to do in the past and uninstalled Itunes 10.4.1.10 and all of its associated programs (iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update) on my Windows 7 x64 system. Be sure to rename profile's c:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes folder to something like "iTunes_old". I then rebooted my system and then downloaded iTunes 9.2.1 (http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes9/061-8727.20100722.Cde32/iTunes64Setup.exe) and installed it. I added my iTunes folder on my NAS and let it sync. Once that was complete I ran "Start - All Programs - Apple Software Updat"e and installed the latest version of iTunes that it presented. Once I did that, VOILA, it works fine with no pausing, freezing, BSOD .... nothing! Hope this helps everyone as I know how frustrating it can be to be a Windows user in an Apple world. Still love Apple products, though.

P.S. Everything worked fine with iTunes 9.2.1, but I wanted the new functionality that iTunes 10 offered so it seems installing a fresh copy of iTunes 10.x.x on a new system will not work, at least in my experience. It seems that we need to install iTunes 9.2.1 first and then upgrade to 10.x.x. Best of luck! :-)

Unfortunately, KJinthe417, the iTunes 10.5 update has broken compatibility again with mt-daapd. It appears to be a different problem from the one that caused an issue when iTunes 10 came out, but I've been unable to narrow it down much more thus far. From what I can see iTunes requests the server-info but then just spins. I'm assuming it's now requiring a tag that it didn't before (and which mt-daapd isn't providing) but as of yet I'm not sure which.

I hope Apple is able to find a solution to this. It is worse with 10.5 and with the wifi syncing. It is very bad. I have several podcasts which are syncing with the NAS and the spinning ball is very big nuisance. Under the applications, I see _windowserver CPU and Virtual Mem spiking all the time. Is that a clue? It is a SMB server setup. USB harddrive connected to a DD-WRT router. Had the same issues with several routers/DDWRT and non-DDWRT combos.

thoughts?

I have a Blackarmor NAS 220. I spent time on the phone with Seagate yesterday and they said that the new iTunes was not compatible and so there was an update that needed to be done. They helped me through a firmware update for the NAS and had me uninstall the Blackarmor Discovery, and reinstall the latest directly from their website. That brought everything back up and visible on my Mac.
