You must have a smaller TV.

Not small.

I hope Hulu is better with HD content.

It isn't. Netflix video quality is much better on my TV than that of Hulu, and I rarely have a problem with the Netflix stream, whereas Hulu buffered frequently, and I never got used to those annoying commercial interruptions. I canceled my Hulu Plus account because it just wasn't worth it. Netflix provides a much better service for the same monthly subscription fee.

Netflix has absolutely none of the new shows. Hulu has more up to date content than Netflix.

That is not quite true, have you been able to keep up with SNL on Hulu? The content is not identical, but Netflix frequently adds new selections.

It's also worth nothing that the recent Comcast takeover of NBC Universal requires NBCU to make the same content available to competing services that they provide for Hulu.

Crappy quality on larger televisions plus older content means Netflix *** for me.

Netflix adjusts the bit rate of the stream dynamically during playback in order to avoid buffering delays, and that can affect picture quality on slow networks. Perhaps your Netflix picture quality problem is actually a network speed problem either with your ISP or your LAN.

iOS 4.3 adds video functionality to airplay, so you can stream video from a mobile iOS device to an Apple TV. It says that its going to work with "airplay enabled apps" and I really hope that Hulu will be one of them. Theres also going to a digital AV adapter which can replicates whatever is on the mobile iOS device's screen to an HDTV. I haven't decided which option I like more -- AirPlay with AppleTV or the digital AV adapter.

The current version of iOS can stream video to an ATV2 from AirPlay compatible apps on AirPlay compatible devices.

I believe the A/V adapter is for the new iPad only. It has the new dual-core A5 SOC, which is capable of video output up to 1080p and can also do desktop mirroring from an iPad to a TV connected by the A/V adapter. The 1st-gen iPad, the iPhone 4 and the ATV2 use the A4 SOC, which I do not believe will support those features.

Given that the A5 SOC is considerably faster than the A4 SOC and that it is capable of 1080p video output, it wouldn't surprise me to see an ATV2.1 popping up in the relatively near future.

No ... the current version of iOS (4.2.1) cannot stream video from apps to ATV2. Video will only stream from YouTube app. Audio will stream from everywhere though. This is a known issue and one of the improvements of the upcoming iOS. Why would Apple announce that video streaming will be supported in 4.3 as a new feature? It's only available through the YouTube app now ... Period. Even the built in photos app won't stream your recorded videos. I have 2 iPads and an iPhone all on current OS along with ATV2 on latest firmware.

Ahhhh ok that sounds more correct. Lol. You mentioned it allowed streaming from compatible apps, suggestion there is more than one ... and anything that is compatible. What you say is true though (given your correction). I can't wait for the ability to stream apps from the native Hulu app, or even from any video playable within a web browser like SkyFire (if they make it compatible).

Merely that the potential is there. It's up to individual developers to decide if they want to give it that capability or not.

The new iPad can do desktop mirroring when connected to a TV with its A/V adapter (sold separately), but Apple is still using the term "AirPlay-enabled apps" on its website for iOS 4.3, which would suggest essentially the same situation as now, leaving it up to the individual developers to decide whether or not to include that capability.

Desktop mirroring is just that ... it mirrors everything on your desktop including all apps. The support handled by individual developers is what to do with the output. For example desktop mirroring with a presentation software would suck. I dont want to see my slide on the device. I want to see my slide on the overhead and my notes on the device. With 4.2 though, there was absolutey no support for compatible apps. There was no released API that let developers do that. There was only support for the internal YouTube app. But ... we should stop arguing semantics. The point here is ... the new iPad 2 has support for desktop mirroring, and iOS 4.3 will allow our devices to stream video from all apps making use of the newly provided APIs.

There are two separate issues here. Desktop mirroring on the iPad is not related to AirPlay streaming to an ATV, and it requires the iPad to be connected directly to the TV via its adapter. I would expect full-screen resolution, however, with the iPad being capable of 1080p output.

I haven't seen anything to indicate that it will stream video from all apps, as Apple states only that video streaming is possible from "AirPlay-compatible apps." The developers will still have to add that capability to their apps. Apps that are not currently AirPlay-compatible would need to be upgraded to take advantage of the new APIs.

Netflix is on ATV because Netflix paid for a spot. Just like YouTube. Apple isn't worried about competition. iTunes is 70% music. TV and movies aren't too much of a worry. Hulu will be on ATV when Hulu pays Apple to place an app on the device. It's on the iPhone because it's presented as an option. So give Hulu a little while to become a bigger name company, make more money, and it will eventually come through as an update.

Apple TV would dominate the streaming box market, if they opened it up to more content like Roku. We'd get one for each tv, if there were more content options. Since we're a Mac household it would be a great advantage to stream photos, movies, and music from a central home computer to every tv in the house. Please Apple, open up the content on this shiny black box, so we can ditch cable for good and finally end cable's entertainment monopoly. We'd have more money to spend on Apple stuff without having to pay our ridiculously huge cable bill each month; for the privilege of having to watch endless commercials.
