WD External Hard Drive blinking blue light

I have used this with my mbp for a few years - no problem.
I moved and couldn't locate factory power/ data cable, so used others that fit. Icons appeared on desk top but before I could open I powered down to do other work. Found the factory cables, hooked them up, but now the external just blinks it's blue light, and no icons appear on desktop or in utilities.

Have I totally screwed up?

mac book pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

the usb cable should not really differ they are standard but the change in power cable can spell disaster easily . even if they use the same socket two power adapter can easily have double the voltage and can easily damage your equipment .altho I'm not saying this is what happened to you it is a possible scenario when you experiment with power bricks not intended for a device
