iTunes 10 won't import from CD

Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac with Mac OS X 10.6.4 on both computers. In addition, I updated both computers to iTunes version 10 this morning.

The issue I am facing is that every time I try to import CDs (original ones) into iTunes, both computers start to behave really strange. But let me describe this in more depth:

- I insert the CD
- Snow Leopard recognizes the CD and shows it in the Finder
- iTunes opens
- Behavior 1: iTunes starts going crazy. It shows the CD for a few seconds and then starts to jump between the CD and the Music section, constantly (like, at least, 5 times a second or so). In addition, iTunes won't react to any input, anymore. This goes on for 20 seconds or so and suddenly the CD is gone in iTunes. The Finder won't show the CD, too, although it is still in the DVD drive.
- Behavior 2: The behavior is more or less the same despite the fact that iTunes and the Finder won't unmount the CD. Instead iTunes keeps jumping between the CD and the music section. Furthermore, the Finder shows not only one but three CDs from which two are greyed out, and the CD icon is jumping all over the background image of the Finder. In this case, it only helps to reboot the computer (a restart of the Finder does not help) to get the two CDs unmounted.

Unfortunately, both behaviors do appear on both computers. Might that be a software bug or am I doing anything wrong? It is certain that both computers were able to import CD before version 10 of iTunes, and it is also certain that both CDs can be imported to iTunes (I did that years ago). But I need the songs in a different format, and so I have to do it again. Sadly, it does not work anymore. Does anyone know an answer to this or can help in any way?

Thanks!

Thorsten

I couldn't find explorz plist file, and I have tried other suggestions to no avail. I am still having trouble trying to import an audio cd. The iMac makes a buzzing sound then ejects the cd. If you don't mind explaining to me exactly how to access my own plist file so that I can insert this code, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much!

About every second disc now does this. It mounts and is labelled by the Finder as a generic Audio CD. Then iTunes identifies and tags it. It's unmounted so that it can be remounted with the new disc name. This is where it freaks out. It doesn't remount the disc. Ejcting and reinsertion works, but so does mounting manually in Disk Utility as you've mentioned. Bloody annoying, especially as I've just started a 700-CD ripping project!

I started getting the "required disk can't be found" error message for CD imports too. After unchecking the "automatically get track names box" in preferences and restarting iTunes, importing goes fine now, though I have to manually select "get CD track names" before each import. Kind of a hassle but at least it works. I'm not using Snow Leopard, however. I'm still in 10.5.8.

Exactly the same issue here. I cannot believe how bad apple software became lately. I bought just a brandnew macbook pro, had terrible problems with freezing trackpads (most probably software issue) and now again problems with importing cd into itunes. Still can`t believe that this is apple. Probably have to buy a windows computer in the future

I work at a school with 1000+ Macs.

This issue is now affecting every single one of those machines, And of corse apple is trying to tell us that its our fault with something that we did.

Lets just forget the fact its affecting My personal macbook as well as my Mom's.

Why does apple have a habbit of ignoring issues like this, Just acknowledge it and people will be happy.

I've also had this problem on both Macbook & iMac - hence, why I'm here in this forum 😉

I've tried all manner of 'fixes' and have experienced all the glitches mentioned in this thread.

I do have a solution to offer.
In >iTunes >Preferences >General
change 'When you insert a CD:' to 'SHOW CD'
and un-check 'Automatically retrieve CD track names from the Internet'

The CD becomes available and you can import it.
The down-side is that you have to manually enter the track names, as the CDDB does not appear to recognize them. Perhaps this is where the 'bug' lies?

Good luck
Hope it works for you.

I have the same problem importing music from CDs since updating to iTunes 10.0.1. I insert the CD, get it recognized, but when I tell it to import the CD, it says that it cannot find it.

But here is something new: Neither will it import aiff or apple lossless files that have already been ripped. I use dbPoweramp on Windows to rip my CDs, so that I can use AccurateRip to check the accuracy of the rip. After transferring the files to my Mac's hard drive, I drag the files into the iTunes music window, as usual, but nothing happens. The songs do not show up in iTunes, nor on the hard drive where iTunes manages my music files. I also tried the File/Add-to-Library approach to no avail. This suggests that the problem is deeper than just getting the files off of the CD. ITunes is not accepting the files into the library, regardless of the source. The files I was importing had tag information from the dbPoweramp rip. I did not try it without tag information.

Fortunately, I can listen to the songs through the AyreWave player, which does not require the files it plays to be in the iTunes library. However, I want to use iTunes to manage my library for me, so I look forward to Apple getting this fixed.
