iTunes 10 won't import from CD

Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac with Mac OS X 10.6.4 on both computers. In addition, I updated both computers to iTunes version 10 this morning.

The issue I am facing is that every time I try to import CDs (original ones) into iTunes, both computers start to behave really strange. But let me describe this in more depth:

- I insert the CD
- Snow Leopard recognizes the CD and shows it in the Finder
- iTunes opens
- Behavior 1: iTunes starts going crazy. It shows the CD for a few seconds and then starts to jump between the CD and the Music section, constantly (like, at least, 5 times a second or so). In addition, iTunes won't react to any input, anymore. This goes on for 20 seconds or so and suddenly the CD is gone in iTunes. The Finder won't show the CD, too, although it is still in the DVD drive.
- Behavior 2: The behavior is more or less the same despite the fact that iTunes and the Finder won't unmount the CD. Instead iTunes keeps jumping between the CD and the music section. Furthermore, the Finder shows not only one but three CDs from which two are greyed out, and the CD icon is jumping all over the background image of the Finder. In this case, it only helps to reboot the computer (a restart of the Finder does not help) to get the two CDs unmounted.

Unfortunately, both behaviors do appear on both computers. Might that be a software bug or am I doing anything wrong? It is certain that both computers were able to import CD before version 10 of iTunes, and it is also certain that both CDs can be imported to iTunes (I did that years ago). But I need the songs in a different format, and so I have to do it again. Sadly, it does not work anymore. Does anyone know an answer to this or can help in any way?

It is November 5 and I am plagued by precisely the same problem - on on my 2009 iMac 24 inch - as described in Thorsten AB's post on September 2nd. Since then we have had multiple Apple launches (and I bought the new Air on the first day, with glee) and yet this problem remains unresolved. I just reinstalled iTunes to try and solve this, to no avail. Rather than dissipating energies on SNS experiments how about the Apple techies get back to resolving the most basic of functionality issues with this core product? I so won't to believe that Apple products just work.. but this doesn't. Please fix it NOW!!

I get the problem of tracks being listed with no names/details. Right click on the first track, select 'get track names' and up they come.

I have this same issue happening on my Windows XP machine with iTunes 10.0.1.22

The CD drive is not detected and shown in the Devices section when I insert a new CD. I have to open the CD in something else and start playing it in order for iTunes to see it.

When I eject the CD in iTunes it still shows in the Devices section. If I insert a new disc it does not recognize that the disc has changed.

This is unacceptable.

Apple used to be better than this. Now it's all about the iPhone and who cares if anything else works.

Maybe this is why they removed the CD from the logo. A subtle way of telling us that CDs won't work right anymore.

I just had the exact same problem on a 10.5.8 machine. I did find a work around, but not a solution.

Close itunes

In System Prefs, go to CDs & DVDs

For Music CDs choose ignore

Close Sys Prefs

Insert CD

When it shows in the finder, click on it. Then, double click on the first track (or which ever track you want)

Itunes will then open and play the CD. You can also at this point import the CD if you want.

It seems to be purely a problem with itunes not recognising the disks, when the computer sees them fine...

Here's the problem:

1. Insert disc.
2. iTunes doesn't have a set of tags for it (appears as generic "Audio CD" on desktop containing "Track 01, "Track 02", etc.
3. iTunes gets the tags.
4. iTunes unmounts the disc.
5. iTunes remounts the disc so the Finder can display the tags (disc is named, contains track names).

It's the remounting process that fails. You can see iTunes read the disc, then loses track of it.

I keep Disk Utility open and whenever this happens, I click the disc, which appears under the optical drive's name and is greyed out (usually called "Audio CD") and click the Mount button. Works every time and better than ejection and reinsertion.

Same here, same here. Incredibly frustrated. The spacebar fix that some have mentioned didn't work for me (it actually made it worse: the rapid flashing never stopped and I had to forcibly eject the CD) but turning off the retrieval of track names did. It shouldn't even need to be said, though, that that's not a satisfactory solution.

The original post about this issue was Sept. 2; it's now into November. Fix coming anytime soon?

Hello everyone, the new itunes 10 will not rip a cd and it will not create an acc file either. Go on and try it. I am always adding my vinyl collection to my ipod but now I cannot do anything.
I feel that apple had better had do something quick before the Christmas season before everyone gets their new ipods only to find out that they cannot rip cds. While, at the same time, all of the people that get turntables will find that they are unable to add that music as well.
C'mon Apple, get with it. Each new version of itunes has been more and more unstable in many ways.
I should be the itunes auditor to fully test it out. This would have never happened!

I just updated to a newer version labeled 10.1 (54) about 10 hours ago.

It seems to have fixed the problem for me. I can even get track names again.

Am I a special case or is it fixed for everybody?

When I try to import a CD on my WIndows 7 computer, itunes says it has stopped working and closes, started just after I updated to 10, Any help would be nice.

Downloading and re-installing iTunes did the trick for me, nothing else adviced in this thread worked.
Wonder if the automatic update that was used initially was the culprit?

Finally...success! Thanks for the post. It's been a while since I've attempted to import a CD so not sure how long I've had the problem but this morning was full of frustration. Your tip solved the problem.

Check which iTunes 10 update you have. I was running the 10.1.0.54 update. I googled "itunes account won't import cds" This was the first link that popped up.

Follow the directions starting with Download Update. I've got a 64 bit Toshiba laptop running on Windows 7. It downloaded the 10.1.0.56 update. No more problems. It's importing them, getting all the titles and the artwork. Hope this helps someone. Oh and forgive my description of my computer if it doesn't make sense. I know nothing about this stuff.

I know that this is quite an old thread but I'm just going to bump it for the sake of solving a really annoying problem.

I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch with iTunes 10.0.1 and I have the exact same problem as the OP. I hope Apple will fix this problem soon because it's obviously iTune's problem because the CD plays fine with VLC player. I mean I imported songs from CDs onto my computer before iTunes 10 and it worked just fine so I don't get why a newer version of the software should have problems with basic stuff like this. I mean I get that Apple probably believes that we should all buy our music from iTunes or something but well, they should still accomodate for people who use this "dead" format as a source of music.

Also I was wondering whether they fixed the problem with the new iTunes update (10.1) because I'm unable to download that update right now because of restrictions with the internet but if the update has fixed it then I guess I'll just have to wait for it...which ***** because I'm going to be traveling by long-distance flight in a few days and I would greatly appreciate being able to listen to my new CD on the plane...:(

after spending the las week removing bonjour as itunes wouldn't update....(pesky program) i finally got 10.1.0.56 installed....and to my joy, the CD drive doesn't show up!. Followed the task of turning if auto track names and its fine, just right click and get track names that way....

So has this actually been solved as someone said the latest update didn't have this problem?, so why do i??
