New iPod Touch 4G Camera resolution?

Nope, that's the spec. Probably more suited for video than pictures, kind of like the outgoing Nano.

I can't find any information on the still image size for either the front or rear cameras on the iPod Touch page. I tried to call Apple tech support this morning and it took the tech almost 20 minutes to find it. She finally told me 4.5MP, but I'm not going to believe it until I see it in writing.

Just called Apple back again to talk to another rep. That rep just repeated the description on the website and didn't even bother to look for any additional information. She just kept reading back the technical specs to me. I just hung up.

It's right there under Tech Specs under "Camera, photos, and video":

"still photos (960 x 720) with back camera"

960 x 720 = 691,200, or 0.7MP

I'll withhold final judgement until someone shows me still photos taken with this 0.7mp camera but the way the cameras have been promoted as a new feature almost feels like deception. I am actually very disappointed and have cancelled my pre-order. I was really looking forward to getting this model too.

I think there are going to be a lot of people surprised at the photos this thing takes. I am not canceling my pre-order I will wait and judge it for myself. Folks just love to jump up and no one has seen the first picture taken with this camera yet.

Centurion, I have to say don't jump off the bridge just yet to write-off the iPod touch as a bad product. Unfortunately apple slim down the iPod touch design even more sacrificing camera resolution, it wasn't a very smart move indeed but now that doesn't matter. According to several reports of actual people playing with the iPod touch device at the event experience that the rear-facing camera offers a relatively low 960×720 pixel resolution, as compared to 2592×1936 pixels on the iPhone 4. That means it produces photos that are only 14% the size of those taken with big brother iPhone 4. Hopefully the iPod touch is using a backlit sensor, so the color rendition and low light performance will hopefully be closer to the iPhone 4 than earlier iPhones, which took comparatively grainier and muted photos.

On a related note, I'm also really wondering how the new iPod touch is going to handle FaceTime, given that it appears to lack the dual microphone system of the iPhone 4????

I don't think the lack of dual microphones should be too much of an issue. Sure, they cancel out some of the noise the way a pair of noise canceling headphones would, but its just gonna be like talking to somebody on speakerphone through a regular phone. The dual microphones are more of an additional feature to make the calls sound better; they're not mandatory in order to be able to hear somebody.

I agree I think it is more just the idea that the mic is on the back when you will be using the front facing camera. I am sure their testing indicated the mic was strong enough to work just fine. In fact it may work better because you will not actually be speaking directly into it.

Next week as these start arriving to reviewers and end users like us we will get the answer to all our questions and concerns. I personally think they are going to hit another home run with this thing even with the lower quality rear cam.

We'll just have to wait and see how the quality looks, very disappointing it wasn't at least 3 megapixels, I may wait for the next gen now

Centurion, I would just go to an AT&T store and purchase the phone w/o service. That way you have all the features of both. I believe the price is the same.

Let me correct you on that......Unfortunately, the price is not the same as you buy an iPod touch at a fraction price of that of the IPhone. The highest amount of the price of an iPod touch is $399.99, you compared that of an iPhone 4 price without any service and the price is much higher twice of the price of the iPod touch. According to apple and AT&T an iPhone price starts at $599.99 and $699.99 of an 32GB. So if centurion would like a higher resolution camera, it might have to shell out of his pocket a lot more money than of an iPod touch.

Am I glad to visit this page. I have been praying for this type of itouch with video and camera in it, but it seems like I still have to wait for a better one with a higher MP. Thanks for all the info!
