tracks in same album split into different "albums"

currently, I have a couple of different individual albums split into different albums.

examples: one track of Desertshore by Nico (which has only one disc) "belongs" to a different album, according to iTunes. (it also has a slightly different automatically retrieved album cover.) similarly, +The Madcap Laughs+ (which also has just one disc) by Syd Barrett has gotten split up into two albums. (again, with slightly different album covers.) other albums have the same problem.

I have tried going to Get Data and methodically making sure that the data matches and it still doesn't work. I have tried deleting all the info about individual tracks and still iTunes remembers the metadata. maddening! what can I do about this?

note that I have tried using iTunes 10's feature where you can edit all information in an album at once. a good feature, but it can't merge albums. manually dragging and dropping in and out of folders also does help, of course.

I don't know if this has officially been solved but the best way to do it as I've found is to highlight what you need to go into the same album, Get Info and then click on sorting. Put in the relevant info in Artist and Album fields and then click ok. Works for me every time.

Depending on why the album was split in the first place that may be sufficient to link things in iTunes, then fail if the same tracks are put onto an iPod. Consistency in the primary fields is preferable to attempting to mash distinct values with the sort field. The Grouping tracks into albums article should provide a solution that works regardless of the cause, and works reliably when the tracks are put onto a device or the library is expanded.

Given this discussion was "solved" nearly three years ago I'm really not sure why it hasn't been archived yet. 😕

I am glad it has not been archived, turingtest2. It has turned into a useful place for many to come and get help and offer ideas for solving the same kinds of problems, just as the original poster said was his purpose when he deliberately did not mark this thread as having solved his problem.

I would like to express my appreciation to turingtest2, as one of the chief contributors to the thread, and to all the others who have taken the time to explain the solutions that worked for them.

Today I tried, repeatedly, everything I could find in this thread to solve my problem of having tracks from one album appear, in my iTunes library on my Mac, separately in two different abums of the same name. Nothing worked. In the end, what did work was a solution that I had not seen in the thread (or in any of the links in the thread), or if it was there and my eyes had passed over it I had not grasped it when I saw it.

My solution was to highlight all the tracks, choose to edit the information in all of them, choose 'Sorting' from the options that appeared and then choose 'Sort Album' and type in the album name there.

If anyone is coming here on their last hopes before they rip their hair out, I completely understand. I was there too. I had one song that loved to seperate itself from the others on my iphone but not in itunes. After 2 hours I found out that the one song that loved its independence had "part of a compilation" checked in the get info section. after that everything was fine. Itunes is an absolute ***** and if you mess one tiny thing up (and you're OCD like me) its a nightmare
