tracks in same album split into different "albums"

currently, I have a couple of different individual albums split into different albums.

examples: one track of Desertshore by Nico (which has only one disc) "belongs" to a different album, according to iTunes. (it also has a slightly different automatically retrieved album cover.) similarly, +The Madcap Laughs+ (which also has just one disc) by Syd Barrett has gotten split up into two albums. (again, with slightly different album covers.) other albums have the same problem.

I have tried going to Get Data and methodically making sure that the data matches and it still doesn't work. I have tried deleting all the info about individual tracks and still iTunes remembers the metadata. maddening! what can I do about this?

note that I have tried using iTunes 10's feature where you can edit all information in an album at once. a good feature, but it can't merge albums. manually dragging and dropping in and out of folders also does help, of course.

I bought some songs from the Deluxe version and some from the regular version and found no point in buying the same songs again so I just combined the albums which was no problem. Track #1 "The a Team" was also in a seperate album so I put it in there as well.

The cloud symbol shows that none of the tracks are stored on the phone so what you see is the original store metadata. If you connect the phone to iTunes and sync those tracks to the phone they should merge. That said if either iTunes or the device are showing store content there is a risk that they may display the original store metadata rather than the users own tag details. Signing out of the store and then back in again usually fixes this.

I read your post as suggesting, if unintentionally, that for each track you would have the same value for Album and Album Artist.

Album Artist isn't mandatory provied there is a common value for Artist for all tracks of the same album. If there are different values for Artist they can be linked together with Album Artist. If the tracks are destined for a non-iOS Apple device then you also want a common Artist, or to set Part of a Compilation to Yes.

All this and more at Grouping tracks into albums.

I posted now because I recently had the issue come up. Using the grouping tracks into the same album method for this particular problem is not the right approach. You should not have to manually edit album information for things purchased through iTunes. My method is the right one. It allows the device to re-download and organize on its own instead of forcing it.

If you wanted to edit album information that came from outside of the iTunes store then the other method is correct.

We can agree to differ, but the iTunes Store doesn't always set the metadata in a way that works best with the iTunes application and all Apple devices, or that suits the end user's wants. Ideally deleting and redownloading wouldn't be needed either. Sadly iTunes doesn't have a method for dragging one or more tracks to an existing album as, for example, Windows Media Player does.

Thanks, my issue was fixed by that article. I also wonder if it's due to 'acquiring' different album tracks from 'different places/sources'...who knows what meta data comes along for the ride when you 'find' music from the wilds of the internet. I don't get any of these issues from ripping my own CDs or purchasing music from reputable sources. Thanks for the tips.
