Updating Iphone Firmware freezes Iphone... How can I stop it happening

Hi all.

I have a persistant and irritating issue that whenever I attempt to download and install an iphone OS update, it will get to about 75% complete and then freeze. In order for me to sort this out, I have to unplug the iphone from my Macbook and install the update on my PC. This also happens with my Ipad.

Its a pain as it then means that once the OS update has been installed from my PC, I have to recreate my iphone from the last backup from my Macbook.

Has anyone else encountered this, and solved the problem without having to resort to using another computer or some other method. Would a complete uninstall and reinstall of Itunes help maybe?

Id like to be able to plug it in, install and go without the faf im currently having.

My set up is:
Iphone 4 - 32GB
Ipad - 64GB
Macbook Pro 13inch - 4mb RAM, 320GB hardrive

My macbook is brand new and I was hoping it would have solved the problem by having a new machine, but (maybe stupidly) I resorted this new Macbook from the Time Machine backup of my old one so that all my data was transferred, so I think that if its something to do with the Macbook, the problem has been transferred over from my old one.

Any ideas?

Does anybody have a solution for this issue? I've had it about six times now and always at the most inconvenient times. Apple doesn't want to step up to the plate to fix it. I've done the complete uninstall and reinstall of itunes and it works once (and in no way is me spending an hour doing this a solution to the problem), but then it reverts back to the same issue the next time I try to update. And Apple wonders why people try to jailbreak their phones? Maybe because we want to have something work for once! I'm using a macbook and I don't have a PC to go plug it into, nor do I want one....the reason I got the iPhone was so that all my devices could be seamless....

If anybody has any more information on what has worked for them, please post. I'm going to the apple store tomorrow to get a new phone and to complain to them about this issue that is obviously widely known. Thanks for the info from everybody experiencing the same thing. FRUSTRATING!

I hate to be another one of those posters that says "me too" and had no helpful information but it seems weird that it's a problem we are all having trying to update firmware with our macs and have to head over to our PCs to actually complete an update.. I bought a MacBook because of how well everything syncs together like iPhoto ect. This shouldn't be an issue! It's an Apple product connected to an Apple product! Hopefully eventually the right person finds this thread and can help! Please!!

I'm a "me too" as well. Still no luck after several iTunes uninstalls. Thought it might have been some conflict with a script I had running to sync with a little Sansa Clip but still doesn't work with any i-device, not my iPhone 4, the girlfriends 3GS, the new iPad 2 and the old iPad which I just sold. Have to backup the devices on the MBP, then drag out the PC to update and then back to the MBP to restore from backup. Very frustrating...

I hope this helps at least some of you!

Did you ever download an app called Wi-Fi Sync? Well, if you did you need to uninstall it to fix this problem! Unfortunately they don't make it all that easy and you have to go to their site to download an uninstall app. On top of that, if you didn't have an Admin Password (like me..) because maybe you got tired of having to type in a password every time you wanted to ok something, then the uninstaller won't work! So in my case I had to go to System Preferences/Accounts and change (create) a password! I finally was able to get rid of the stupidly made Wi-Fi Sync!

Let me know if this helps any of you out! I hope so! I know how frustrating it is to not be able to update/restore your phone from your fancy Mac you bought and have to go run to your nearest PC lol..

I don't know if anybody has fixed their issues yet but I was having the same problem for a long (painful) time. To update my iPhone to the newest iOS I would have to use somebody elses PC to get the firmware on my iPhone then plug it back into my MacBook Pro to get all my music, photos, contacts, etc. synced up.

I have recently fixed this issue and I hope this can help some of you as well:

I had a program on my MacBook Pro called Wi-FiSync and I had to uninstall it completely

1: Go to thier webpage and download the uninstaller http://wifisyncapp.com/beta/

2: Unzip this folder to your desktop

3: Open the folder and double click the "uninstaller"

4: Terminal will open and prompt you for your admin password

*If you don't have an admin password, make one before you do this

5: Type in you admin password and hit return (it may look like you aren't typing anything but just go ahead, type your password and hit return) it will begin the uninstallation

6: Once this is complete, open spotlight search and type "sync" the install folder for WiFi Sync should show up (the little brown box with the flaps open" Drag this to the trash.

7: (I did this for good measure) Drag the zip file and the and the WiFi Sync uninstaller that you downloaded to the trash.

8: Empty trash

9: Restart your Mac

10: Plug up your iDevice, open iTunes, and press restore.

This should bring you through the normal process but instead of freezing, it should complete the restore and you should be able to update your firmware from now on.

I hope this helps all or at least some of you.

Good Luck.
