Itunes 10 Homesharing Can't Drag and Drop between computers!

Im a Professional DJ and i use (used) Itunes to keep both computers libraries up to date via Home shareing and drag and drop of files. With itunes 10 I can't seem to do that anymore. I am VERY frustrated as I Bought the music and i own both the computers!! Now i have to copy to a flash drive, remove it, put it in computer #2, then recopy. Anyone have any ideas to help this as it seems apple loves to mess with things....

This thread is a little old but I thought I'd post a solution that worked for me.

In iTunes 9 I had Home Sharing working then I upgraded to iTunes 10 and it didn't work. I'm home sharing between a Mac and a Windows 7 laptop, below is what worked for me to get it working again:

1) In the iTunes > Advanced menu "Turn Off Home Sharing" in each iTunes. (I closed both iTunes down and then reopened them, but you probably don't have to.)

2) Then in the Preferences > Sharing Tab in both iTunes I unchecked "Share my library on my local network". (There is a difference between sharing locally via preferences menu and home sharing via advanced menu, sharing locally allows streaming from your library of whatever you choose to share and Home Sharing is full or at least a lot more access and options)

3) Again I shut down both iTunes and then opened them back up. I then went to the Advanced menu and selected "Turn On Home Sharing" which brought up the home sharing screen in iTunes asking me to login with my iTunes account then I did the same in the Windows iTunes and again I was prompted to login. (I logged in with the same account on both, and had already authorized each computer)

Presto, I could now see both libraries with the little music house and could do all the great home sharing things.

One other note, on my Windows laptop that has McAffee Security Center I had to not only open TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 but I had to open them to All PCs, not just PCs in my home or local network. Even though both laptops are on the same home network I think it has something to do with the use of Bonjour for home sharing and my Mac's Bonjour IP Address is not an IP in my home network range. (I was playing with Bonjour Browser and noticed this) I'm not really sure, I just know this was the only way I could ever see my Windows iTunes library in my Mac's iTunes.

I just solved this problem in the most ridiculous way. I had the same problem many of you are mentioning. I wanted to access my brother's iTunes library to Home Share our music. When I started the process I activated both computers to share with each other. His library appeared in my iTunes and vice versa, but I could only listen to the music, not drag and drop. When I opened the Advanced bar and looked down at the Disable Home Share option, it had my brother's iTunes account name in parenthesis, Disable Home Share (brothershareaccount1032@whatever.com). I clicked it to disable and re-enable like some of you said, but this time it prompted me to enable Home Sharing with MY OWN account. I enabled home sharing with my account, now changing the Disable Home Share option to read (myaccount@whatever.com). I expected his library to disappear, but it didn't, and I could click and drag his content into my library. Hope this helps somehow. Don't know why it worked.

hi al

first post in this forum because Home Sharing just started to mess around with my head. i read and tried all that was nicely detailed on this thread, but no avail

1) i tried authorizing/deauthorizing, signing in/out of home sharing.

2) i can see the other computer (macbookair) from my win7 PC, and vice versa

3) i can play music with the SHARED list on the left.

playing music is fine, but whenever i try to drag a file it says it's not a member of homesharing, and drops this relationship link immediately ! why does it do that! (i have to sign into home sharing again, try again and same result)

would someone please help> it used to work, but now not anymore!

Hi, all.

I had the problem with the Import button missing, and finally figured it out.
There are two different methods of sharing an iTunes library:

a) Home Sharing (Advanced => Turn On Home Sharing). This method allows you to Import.
b) Old-style Sharing (Edit => Preferences => Sharing => Share my library on my local network). This method does not allow you to Import.

If you have both Home Sharing and Old-style Sharing active, you won't be able to Import.
If you want to Import music from one computer to another, use only Home Sharing.

1) Turn Off Home Sharing (Advanced => Turn Off Home Sharing) on all computers.

2) Turn off (uncheck) Old-style Sharing (Edit => Preferences => Sharing => Share my library on my local network) on all computers.

3) Turn On Home Sharing (Advanced => Turn On Home Sharing) on all computers. Use the same Apple ID when you turn on Home Sharing.

4) ***DO NOT*** turn on Old-style Sharing on any computer.

5) Go to the computer where you want to import songs.

6) Go into the Home Sharing area (left-hand side: SHARED => Home Sharing => your shared library => Music).

7) Select the music you want to copy (or Edit => Select All).

8) Click: Import (bottom, right-hand corner of screen).

We just spent an hour on this... and it's so simple. I'm guessing by now you have authorized each computer? Well, turn home sharing off on every computer. Go back and turn home sharing ON, but they ALL have to be signed in with the same itunes account. EXAMPLE: Our family wanted to share/copy/ click/ drag songs that we purchased between Mom, Dad, & Son. So on Mom's computer, I clicked "turn home share on" and signed in with mom@itunesaccount.com. Then walked to Dad's computer and clicked "turn home share on" and signed in with mom@itunesaccount.com. Then went to son's computer, clicked on "turn home share on" and signed in with mom@itunesaccount.com. We all still have our original itunes accounts opened with access to all three accounts. WHEW! took us long enough. No need to remove firewalls or other stuff like that. Good luck!

Grand42, you are MY HERO. No, seriously. I've been losing sleep (I know, sad, but I couldn't give up) because I was so darn determined to do what should be working. I think the magical and missing step was to uncheck "Share my library on my local network" just as you critically pointed out, because after I did that, PRESTO!, I was able to select all and drag to my new library. (I followed your other steps exactly, too.) Thanks to you, I can still get a couple of hours in before I have to get ready for work. You're the best!!! 😀 Now I don't need to wait the 45 minutes to speak with Apple tech support, I don't need an appointment at the Genius Bar and I can get some sleep. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
