Multiple instances of same app on "Open With" command: why?

Hi there

Something that has foxed me for a while, is why when I right/command click on a file and select "Open With" I get a huge list with sometimes a huge amount of duplication in terms of the application to choose. Why is this, and does anyone know how I go about sorting this out?
