iMac not shutting down when on UPS power

I've just put in a new APC Back-UPS ES 550 UPS which the computer has recognized; it's shown in the Energy Saver UPS Shutdown options panel. The UPS status in the menu bar shows there are 12 minutes of capacity left... so that's working.

I've set the option to Shut down the computer after using the UPS battery for: 1 minute.

When I disconnect the UPS power plug, the UPS powers the computer, but it won't shut down .... even after several minutes.

I've tried this several times and changed the shutdown interval to 2 minutes, and it won't shut down.

Any suggestions?

Pondini:

You'll get a kick out of the response I received today. The APC tech support guy forwarded this from someone else:

"Have the customer unplug the UPS from the power source and see if the Mac shows a message that the UPS is on battery. If it does not, have the customer unplug the communication cable from the UPS to the computer, *+shutdown the UPS, reboot the Mac+*, attach the UPS communication cable to the Mac after the Mac has powered up, power on the UPS. The UPS will run a selftest and the customer should see a message that the UPS is attached and running on battery power because of the selftest."

Needless to say, that didn't work.

I modified the steps to those you suggested ages ago, but there is still no warning or shut down.

I'll let you know what I hear next!

Sounds like they don't have a lot of Mac customers, or at least don't do a lot of support for them.

That would make sense, since most Mac users with consumer APC systems aren't using APC's software.

Keep after them. They do have a pretty good reputation, and the only problem I've had was handled quite well: the phone line protector somehow failed after a lightning storm, apparently shorted out. If I connected to it, there was a very loud buzz. I asked if there was any way to repair it, and a couple of days later they sent a whole new unit. They said they'd also send a return shipping label, but never did, so I'm still using the old one for my cable modem, Airport Extreme and HD connected to it!

Keep us posted.

Pondini:

As you expected, APC is replacing the UPS.

Here's the note from the "Smartware Global Tiger Team Leader":

We have tested BE550G here with Mac OS 10.6.4 and the OS does shutdown as configured. I since the OS does not see that the UPS is on battery it could be an issue with the UPS itself. Send the customer a replacement BE550G and if that does not fix the issue he should contact Apple for support since this is their software not ours!

Hopefully I won't be contacting Apple!

Pondini:

The new UPS & cable arrived, but neither fixed it, so I called Apple.

"Chad" suggested erasing the HD when reloading the OS (which I hadn't done when I reloaded it the last time!). I did, and then I tested the UPS before I restored anything else, using just the "brand new OS". It worked for the first time, complete with warning message and shutdown at the prescribed one minute interval!

So you were right to suggest replacing the OS; I just didn't do it thoroughly enough!

Now I have another problem with my attempts to restore the rest of the software from Time Machine which I'll explain in a new thread. (One aspect of that is I currently don't have the files that would lead me back into this discussion, so I've reregistered in order to do it. Sorry if that disturbs anything for you.)

Thanks for the advice and support, Pondini!

That's bizarre!

But glad it's fixed, whatever/however it was.

Your best bet will be to use +Migration Assistant.+ Be sure the account you set up after reloading from scratch is different from any on your backups. If it isn't, create a new, temporary Admin account, and log on with it.

See: Using Migration Assistant.

Edit: I should add that if you have complex 3rd-party apps, that came with their own installers, they likely put other things in other places, often in your system folders, besides the app in Applications. Unless you know what and where those other files are, and restore them, too, the app probably won't work properly, if at all. Those apps must be reinstalled from the original discs or re-downloaded and the installer run.

Unfortunately, in an attempt to identify more clearly just what software was at fault, I intended to restore one group of files at a time and tried doing so, only to find I can't restore anything.... apparently because I had unintentionally renamed the HD when I erased it! I've just posted a new question about it.

Unfortunately, since I don't have my original files working (and I apparently don't remember my login correctly), I had to reregister for these discussions, so I can't give you a solved star for this question, yet... I will when I can!!! 🙂 Talk about a comedy of errors!!

One more thing.....

You maybe interested to know that although everything was working fine with the replacement UPS, when I reconnected the original one, the problem resumed! I now have the replacement in service, and it tests out fine. Apparently there IS something wrong with the original, so it's going back to APC.

Thanks again!

HI Dick,

I just finished reading your entire discussion with keen interest because I just purchased an APC UPS ES550 and am experiencing exactly the same problem.

My topic - APC UPS-ES550 Question - has generated several similar suggestions from many of the same individuals. I have tried all of the suggestions to no avail and have been in contact with APC. At this point they are sending me a new USB cable which I don't expect to solve the problem because I have already tried another cable, but they obviously have a step by step approach they need to take.

If I understand correctly you solved your problem with the new UPS and erasing your HD and reinstalling OS X and you also found that the original UPS was in fact bad....correct?

Rather than wait on APC to replace the UPS, I think I will return it to Staples for an exchange since I am still within my 14 day return window.

If you have any suggestions please pass them along.

Thanks.

Just a correction: it's not necessary to erase your HD to reinstall OSX. Snow Leopard doesn't have different Install options, like previous versions of OSX: it just replaces the current installation of OSX with a new one, without disturbing anything else.
