While waiting patiently (well, sort of) for the new update, I found this really helpful review and tests of 4.1 on the 3G phone. Three pages of good info:

The numbers are in dBm units and are WAY more accurate than bars. Been using the feature since 3G came out in '08 and always wondered why ppl still chose to see bars rather than the ACTUAL real-time signal strength number. Even when they knew about this toggle feature. Perhaps being an EE had something to do with the preference lol.

As i mentioned, only way i know of to disable it again is to perform Reset All. If there's an easier way i'd love to hear about it.

I find my 3G running 4.1 much faster than the previous versions of 4.0x. Although I have no way of comparing to my phone running 3.x, I can use the phone without cursing at Apple. Thank goodness.

Now why did Apple release such poor software in the first place and take so extremely long to fix it? Both 4.0x and the iPhone 4 seem to have rushed to market with inadequate testing. The Android phones are looking pretty competitive. Hopefully the iPhone 5 will be a better effort.
