Well Cari, I have used this feature from day one and am in an Apple store right now checking into this. No sale for me until this is restored, so I too will need to find used fourth gen iPods to retain this feature. A lot of people used this feature and now it is gone.

What kind of a moron just listens to hundreds of random songs pulled from thin air without any context?

Hi,

I too have the problem with random plays of songs. This is totally rubbish as I listen to my music in album order, not just in the order that Apple seem to think I might want to listen to it.

Now I accept I could listen to albums in order from the album selection, but this is the thing. I play mine through a car stereo via the usb lead as this is the only way for it to charge it on the move.

Not happy as all other MP3 players that i have had play the musin that I have in the order that I want to!!

I would take the nano back, but it is a present for 10 years service, so not really an option.

Can anyone help?

I can't speak for you. Using the audio crossfade option, I enjoy listening to a mix of genres and beats. Next time, try thinking outside of the box.

I use Shuffle Songs and Shuffle Albums on my old Nano. All I want is to be able to do the same on my new Nano. It's crap that Apple have taken one of the shuffle options away.

I do. Apparently lots of other people do, too. On older iPods, the shuffle function was buried several menu levels down but it was so popular that Apple later made it a top level menu function.

What kind of old fuddy-duddy only listens to music in a rigid, spoon fed order? 😉

What I am sick of is every time someone notices Apple stripping features from a product line (which thankfully does not happen very often) and states their protest on these boards someone like Cari steps in and intimates the person's motivations are to steer people away from Apple by ripping them on these boards over a trivial matter.

Does this charge add to any discussion? How is making such a charge so different? It attempts to put Apple colored blinders on everyone by questioning the motivations of people with real concerns. But, fine, point taken. Too wide a dispersal field. I'll reply to her response to me in a more specific way...

There is a $1.99 app called Album Mixer that restores this missing function to the iPod Touch and the iPhone, but still no way to restore this missing function on the new Nano.

But, you will speak for others who do not wear your Apple blinders by charging them with posting their concerns on these boards in order to steer people away from Apple. Maybe you can try to think outside of your silly little box by understanding Apple is not a perfect company by any stretch. Would you remain silent if Apple stripped your vaunted crossfade from a future iPod? Would you appreciate someone *like you* charging you with being an anti-Apple troll for airing your concerns on these and other boards?

For wear and tear reasons, I never wanted to use my iPhone as my iPod, but by purchasing Album Mixer for $1.99 on the App Store I can add "shuffle by album" functionality to my iPhone. Since there is no way to restore this functionality to the Nano I will not be purchasing a new one. So, whether I like it or not, my iPhone will be my next iPod when my 4th gen iPod stops working. Sale lost over something you say does not matter. Do you think I and several others here missing this function are alone?

I can tell you why (at least in my case). I got very used to album shuffle when I got my 20GB iPod. I found that I liked it quite a bit. Then I get a touch and that functionality is gone. I have tried two album shuffle apps, a trick with smart playlists, but they aren't quite the same as the apps sometimes go into random track land and for some reason, my touch has suddenly decided to stop following playlists. It's frustrating to have to adopt kludges to get something that has been stripped away.
