You misunderstand the desired feature. What people want to do is not shuffle songs within an album. They want to randomly pick an album and play that entire album in its proper song sequence, then randomly pick another album. It's the equivalent of randomly picking a CD off the shelf and playing that entire CD.
It's my favorite way to listen on my old 3rd gen Nano.
Shuffling albums is like shuffling songs. It is a good feeling when the perfect song pops up at the right time. you weren't thinking about that song, yet there it is. Now imagine the same thing only with albums...
great point! some love to hate. i love the 6th gen nano. makes a great watch too. album shuffle gone but shake to shuffle is awesome!😍
TRUE!!!! SHAKE TO SHUFFLE! Better yet create a playlist directly on the device with all the albums you want and shuffle the playlist. Not quite the same but I wouldn't trade this ipod for any other thus far including iphone!

Ah ha! they got ya! Pushed to Iphone data usage and 1.99 app price. Can't "album shuffle" or make calls but you can wear this ipod as a watch! I get compliments before people notice it's an ipod! AND I'll say it again SHAKE TO SHUFFLE is a worthy addition that might have limited some other shuffle options. lot's of love for Mac even if they try to be too future forward at times i.e, ending Me.com website parking very dissapointing but hey you know you love that phone!

Use smart playlists and genius. not the same but close! you can also create playlists on the fly!

I've owned an iPhone since Jan of '07, I just didn't want to use it as my iPod due to wear and tear. My iPhone 4 streams music via bluetooth to my car stereo, so it has turned out to be a better iPod for me than the 6th gen Nano...
that's much cooler than a watch any day! still waiting for eligibility to upgrade! doh
Shuffle By Albums was one of the most, if not THE most, useful feature of my 1st Gen Nano. It allowed the Nano to flow from one random album to the next without stopping or having to fuss with the Nano to get it to keep playing.
Without this function, when a song randomly comes up that's in the middle of an album I'd like to listen to, I'd have to stop what I'm doing, go into the Nano menus, start the album from the top and listen through to the end. At the last song, it stops and I have to get it to play something new.
If anyone else is having this problem, please send an Enhancement Request to Apple to put Shuffle By Album into the 6th Gen on the next update. The more requests are made, the more likely Apple will listen.
