On my 3G, with only a little testing, OS 4.1 is much more responsive than earlier versions of 4.xx: Safari, photos, iCal and contacts are faster. Typing is more responsive. Time will tell if this holds.
After all the problems going to 4.0 from 3.1.3, I'm not sure what the performance under 3.1.3. was really like any more. It will be interesting to see if there are any hangs with 4.1 like there were with prior versions of 4.xx
I've read that 4.1 IS faster on the 3GS. Faster than 4.0.2 and 3.1.3. BUT, did it fix the following common issues we started experiencing after updating to 4.0?
• Phone reboots while on a call
• Phone reboots on it's own
• Mail pushes emails to phone when checking Contacts, and making or receiving calls
• Volume limit much lower
• Battery life drains faster, especially when using Location Service
• Random app crashing/quitting
If anyone that was having all or any of these issues, and the 4.1 update has fixed for you, please let us know.
Speed is nice and all, but it means nothing if the phone doesn't work properly. I would trade speed any day, for my phone to run like it did before the 4.0 update. I'd be willing to even give up all the new features. Since Apple doesn't give us an option to do it ourselves, I'm wondering if we send our phones in to Apple, if they will downgrade us back to 3.1.3?
Thanks for posting the thread, I've been lurking ever since... not seeing enough raves to tempt me to pull my 3G up to 4.1, though. Typing slow, camera response slow... if those persist, I'm just going to wait, I guess.
Has anyone seen anything else seriously wacky, besides the list issue in Calendar?
Thx.
I got the 4.1 update, but iTunes won't sync any music to my phone, and all of my third party apps crash on launch (even Remote--made by Apple). The apps built into the OS work fine...
Went from 4.0 to 4.1 on my 3gs....and never had any of these problems.
• Phone reboots while on a call
• Phone reboots on it's own
• Mail pushes emails to phone when checking Contacts, and making or receiving calls
• Volume limit much lower
• Battery life drains faster, especially when using Location Service
As to the Apps crashing, that's often their fault..perhaps not updated to ios 4.
I can't say I feel that the random app crash in 4.0 on the 3G has the feel of app-specific troubles. Hard to say what the issue is, but never saw any of that behavior (with any of the apps) prior to the 4 upgrade.
I've stayed at 4.0 painfully for these past months, and would love to hear no new big troubles, and stability enough to jump to 4.0. Thanks to all for their insight.
Upgrading from 3.1.3 to 4.1. iTunes took >2 hours to "back up" my phone before it could install. ***? If I could go back to the day I bought the iPhone, I would huy a Droid. I am on my second phone, 3G, and the phone has some cool features. ios 4.0 made me want to shoot my phone, so I downgraded to 3.1.3. Google it and you can do it.
These differences in time when backing up worry me. I have a 16GB iPhone 3G with just 5 gigs free, but it took only 5 minutes to backup... How many photos did you have in the camera roll?
I have 230+ photos in the camera roll, and the backup didn't take long at all. I actually did once, then copied over the backup folder, then did it again. All in less than 5 minutes or so (didn't really time it). Started the process at 3:20pm ended it all (including download on 5Mbps) at about 3:35pm.
