Actually, the steps to achieve it are:
1. Before you import ANYTHING, open iTunes and deselect the preferences W.M. posted about above me.
2. Then you can store your music anywhere and in any way you like, and iTunes will leave it alone and simply reference it without actually importing anything.
So basically I'd start over.
1. Make sure your originals still exist on the other computer, then delete the folders you transferred
2. Set the iTunes prefs to not mess with your music
3. Drag the music folders in from the other computer again
4. Drag the folders over the iTunes icon; since you changed the prefs they will no longer be altered
