Printer Install Fails - This computer does not have the necessary USB...

I have installed Windows 7 x64 via Bootcamp 3.1. I have all necessary drivers running and all of my USB devices are working as expected.

However, when I attempt to install my HP Printer (HP Photosmart B109n-z)software it immediately fails with the following message...

"This computer does not have the neccessary USB software support to allow completion of a USB installation. The installation cannot continue until this is resolved."

I have also run "usbready.exe" from Intel (the tool is also on my HP printer driver CD) to check the USB status of my iMac and despite all of my USB devices working it reports the following...

System Hardware Support
Cannot Determine system hardware configuration

USB Driver Support
USB Driver connection is NOT operating correctly

Can someone please help? I am unable to use this printer at the moment 😟

Let's get the most obvious question out of the way. Are you installing the Windows 7 HP drivers and software while booted into Windows 7? It was not clear to me from your post that you weren't trying to install the software while booted into the Mac. And, are you sure you are installing the Windows 7 drivers, not the Mac drivers? Have you downloaded the most recent Windows 7 drivers from HP? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02251801&tmp_task=solveCate gory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3794625&lang=en#N7928

HP has a trouble shooting guide at the link I posted above.

Thanks Bob, sorry my question was unclear 🙂

And yes, I am in Windows 7 when I am trying to install the Windows 7 drivers - I have tried both the downloaded versions from the HP site and the ones that came on CD with the printer. Interestingly both do work on my Windows laptop, its just failing on my iMac.

I have noticed a few other people with exactly the same problem with mid 2010 iMac's and HP printers.

The troubleshooting instructions are of very little use - everything else is working via USB correctly, there are no yellow icons in device manager and my printer is wireless (and is working on my other PC's). This just seems like a usb driver compatability issue but im not sure how to get it resolved?

Why do you need the USB drivers if your printer is wireless? Does it work wirelessly? Did you set it up wireless with an IP Address then try connecting from Windows 7 to a network printer?

I'm having the same problem (XP SP3 though), I'm getting a complaint from the installer that it doesn't like the USB drivers even though it's a networked printer and it's not even hooked up via USB... (I selected network installation.) The installer wont go any further until this so called USB issue is resolved. For some reason it doesn't like this model, I have a 17" 2008 MBP and it works just fine at installing the drivers.

Just to clarify : 15' (Boot Camp partition) the HP (OfficeJet 7xxxx) printer install sequence in Win XP SP3 stops short BEFORE I can input the type of connection for the printer (USB or Network - Network cable is connected and LAN recognised in Win XP SP3). Latest download from HP (printer drivers only or full package) and/or original install CD (tried with 5 different ones) displays the same behaviour. This applies to 15' MacBook Pro models with non removable batteries (i5 and i7 Intel processor). Issue is not present with 17' and 15' Intel DuialCore MacBook Pro with removable battery. Will appreciate any help !!!

Thanks Bob,

I want to use the scanner wirelessly which requires installing the bundled HP software. Yes, the PRINTER works fine wirelessly and is detected by Windows 7 automatically, but to use the printer and scanner I need to be able to install the full software suite. I have this working on my other PC's, its just the iMac when its running Windows that wont install the software.

I suspect it requires either a chipset driver update or an updated software release from HP, neither of which seem to be available at the moment.

Neil.

Yeah, I've got exactly the same problem on my new iMac running Windows 7 x64 via Bootcamp 3.1. The same HP B110a printer works fine on the Mac OS X side tho (aside from not quite printing from email as well as it should).

I was able to install a USB joystick in Boot camp though earlier so I know my USB ports are working.

Seems likely to me to be some sort of an outstanding bug with Boot Camp, unless Windows users on PCs are reporting the same issue.

Hi,

same problem in Germany!

OS X 10.6.4 plus boot camp 3.1 plus Windows XP home, all with most recent updates
and
HP Photosmart Wireless B109 n - z

don`t allow the installation of the printer software by using the original installation CD. Installing via cd is the only way to achieve the wireless use!!

Same story: The installation stops because of USB driver problems. I tried to install via downloading the software (www.hp.com/support) as suggested by people from the apple hotline - no success! You get to the same point, where the installation process is stopped, asking for usb drivers. But - the two usb port work fine.....with everything else!

It is possible though, to install the printer software by connecting the printer to the usb port. The installation process starts automatically, the program asks for the installation cd and then everything goes its way and works fine. But you have to connect the printer to the MacBook every time you want to print.

But no wireless use!!!

I can only hope, that Apple and HP people read these discussions, because I don`t think we, as users, can solve this problem!!

Pay attention to the reply of "Jonah in Whale "

and I paste it here:

Here’s something I discovered that might help this issue. It appears that the HP driver installation package is using a utility named usbready.exe that is failing a USB check. This program is from 1998! Yikes! So it's probably not able to recognize the new design of the latest Macs. A potential workaround is to eliminate this program by using the following steps:

1) Run the HP installation package executable (i.e. OJP8500vA909 full_12en.exe)
2) When asked to choose the extract directory, make a note of where it is installed. Easiest way would be to tell it to extract to a folder named HP on the Desktop.
3) Navigate to the extracted installation folder (using Desktop\HP in this example)
4) Go to the "Setup" subdirectory (Desktop\HP\Setup)
5) Move, delete or rename the Intel USB System Check utility (usbready.exe)
6) Double click the Setup executable in the main extraction folder (Desktop\HP\Setup.exe)

This should allow the installation to work completely.
I hope this helps.

Hi,

I had the exact problem and consulted this board...before the solution came up. I have a dual boot iMac, and the printer installed just fine on OS X, but I had the same problems installing the printer in Windows, which of course said there was a problem w/ my USB drive or something (even though it printed from OSX!!!).

Anyway, as you know, you're supposed to have the printer not connected to the computer while installing on Windows: the installation process should prompt you to plug the printer into the USB port. After printing something on my Mac OSX side, I restarted in Bootcamp (where Windows is installed), forgetting to unplug the printer (which wasn't installed). Well, I just got a message saying all hardware was installed...and suddenly I could print a document without going through the full installation procedure.

Because the documentation accompanying the printer warns not to plug the printer in first, I'm not sure if this was correct. But it worked for me, wonderfully.
