iPhone 4 / iOS 4.1 Bluetooth with Mazda CX-9

I've got a 2010 Mazda CX-9 (it has the screen but not the Navigation) that I paired with an iPhone 4 (4.0.1) and everytime I turned on the car and it was on Bluetooth-Audio it would automatically start to play. I could also pause and resume by hitting the Pause/Play button on the stereo and I could also adjust the volume.

I just upgraded to iOS 4.1 and I've lost all functionality from the car stereo side. The car says its "Searching" like it normally did for a moment when I turn it on and then says Bluetooth-Audio, however it no longer auto-plays. I've also lost the ability to pause, resume or adjust the volume. I've deleted the device on my iPhone as well as in the car, powered off the car and held the Home & Power buttons on the iPhone until it reset itself. Then I re-paired the two and there was no improvement. I then tried that a second time just to be safe and no improvement.

I'd simply just like to get back to the iOS 4.0 functionality.

The car's owners manual specifically states that my head unit supports A2DP 1.0 and AVRCP 1.0 or 1.3. It says for A2DP only mode that I would get audio playing with absolutely no control via my stereo (what I'm seeing with iOS 4.1). With AVRCP 1.0 the stereo supports Play/Pause/Track up/Track down, which is what I assume I was seeing with iOS 4.0 but only Play/Pause. For AVRCP 1.3 it also adds Reverse/FF/Metadata Display. Unfortunately Apple didn't specify which version of AVRCP iOS 4.1 came with but I can only assume they implemented AVRCP 1.0

If anyone has any suggestions of what else I can try, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Hi guys,

It seems to me that the bluetooth problems on iOS 4.1 are pretty universal. These problems come up with standard BT headsets too. Apple tried to improve the BT performance and fix issues in this update, but they failed miserably. It seems that release testing was neglected pretty bad with this update in general. Now most of the A2DP functionality and HSP/HFP as well seems to malfunction even worse than before.

I filed a bug report at iPhone feedback page. Not sure if it helps, but I think everyone should at least do the same to increase the sheer numbers of complaints. This way we probably have a shot at getting a fix for our problems as soon as possible.

I'm having a severe problem with stereo Bluetooth as well. I have the iLuv i212 headphones and theyve worked great for the longest time, but now it seems like stereo Bluetooth has ZERO buffer, so if I so much as put my phone in my pocket while listening to music, it will get all choppy and even cut out completely. Sometimes it will even cut out when I'm holding the phone in my hand, line-of-sight to my headphones. I don't understand why they had to go and mess with it, it was perfectly fine as is. I want my 4.0 Bluetooth driver back.

Same issues here... I recently bought a used Audi A3 (2006 model). I can pair the iPhone with the bluetooth system in my car, but maintaining the connection is the BIG problem here. In a matter of seconds the connection is lost and then it reconnects again. Problem here is that the iPhone doesn't stay connected more then 10 seconds or so. This happens over and over, connecting, disconnecting, reconnecting, disconnecting and so on...

This makes the whole expensive bluetooth setup in my car totaly useless when using "the newest, most advanced smartphone" there is!! How is this even possible??

My girlfriends HTC Wildfire connects and stays connected without any problems at all! Same with an old SonyEricsson mobile I had before. This proves that the iPhone is the problem. It seems that there are A LOT of people having the same problems. I have sent feedback to Apple... Hope they do something...

I just got around to testing iOS 4.2 GM and it solves all issues with Bluetooth audio in my car. Additionally it now supports Play/Pause, Skip Track, Previous Track functionality that was suppose to come out in 4.1.

Have a similar problem with the COMAND system in my 2010 C class Mercedes. Bluetooth worked fine until I upgraded my iphone 3gs with 4.1 software. Now it frequently shows it to be disconnecting and reconnecting on the screen even though I always stay connected when on a call. It really is distracting when driving when the message constantly goes on and off the screen and also obstructs the satnav screen when in use. I called in my local Apple store but they were unable to assist and I have returned the car to Mercedes who have installed the latest software updates to the COMAND system. I have also re-paired the phone but still the problem continues. If only I could downgrade the iphone software to the previous version that worked perfectly. This whole episode is fast destroying my faith in Apple products.

Yet I just installed ios 4.2 GM and now my bt headset doesn't pick up the phone AT ALL and I can only listen to music but none of the controls now work except volume.

I am only hoping my new BT headset isn't now going to be a white elephant and that apple fix it! Its a motorola S305 btw and it did everything on 4.1 but kept losing the BT connection.

Seems like you all are having audio problems. I'm the exact opposite. I just leased a 2011 Mazda3 5 door and I followed the instructions for pairing my phone. Well it paired, but it won't allow me to make calls. The little symbol that shows in the display is that for an audio device and it's neat how I can control songs from my iPhone 4 with the car, but I'm not to worried about all that. I need the handsfree part for making and receiving calls, especially for when I'm driving on base. I've no idea what the problem is, but when I try to make calls the car tells me that my phone isn't connected.

All - I also just tested the GM of 4.2 on my CX-9. I am pleased to announce that I have full audio controls (volume, skip, back, auto start) and all controls work in the background meaning I can run Google Maps or Navigation and still control audio. The UI to connect to a BT device is also slightly different in the audio app. Thanks for fixing the issue Apple.

I have a 2009 Mazda 6.

I have Upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 from 4.1. Phone calls work, but still can't play music through bluetooth.

I hate to hop on the bandwagon, but I am having similar issues. My iPhone 4 will pair with the car, but doesn't stay connected after starting the car. They don't discover each other later either. I called Apple and they said that they have heard several issues with this and they are looking into it. Then after she came back on the phone after talking with her manager she told me that I would have to call Mazda for them to fix it. I called my local dealer and they sales man had never heard of updating the bluetooth.
Grrrrr!
Apple wants to blame the car, but my Samsung worked just perfectly with the bluetooth!
Has anyone heard ANYTHING from Apple that is actually helpful?

Well after upgrading to 4.2 Apple seem to have fixed it and now i can play pause skip etc with my 2010 Mazda 6 no problem at all.

It has been a very disapointing experance with Apple at no time telling me that they had an issue or where even doing anything about it. They just blamed everything and anything else they could, despite the hard facts that it only stopped working on 4.1 and nothing else changed and now it works on 4.2 and nothing else has changed. with both my 3gs and iphone 4!!!

I have certnaly lost a lot of faith in Apple over it, i have extended support and that seemed to amount to nothing, i was not even informed that it had been fixed or was even being fixed. Despite logging calls for both devices and providing extended information on the issue...

Their result is good, they have now fixed it, but a little customer communication was all it would have taken to make me happy, if they had said yes we have an issue we will fix it in 4.2 release date xxx i would have been a happy customer.

Very disapointing Apple, but happy it now works
