iPod software update version 1.1 for iPod nano (6th generation) is available. You will be able to turn the iPod nano (6th generation) off after updating it.
Software update 1.1 is supposed to solve the problem of turning it off. I already returned my nano for this reason (among others). But I hope it helps other users. Bon chance!
No. I only got 3 hours of play time (even though manual sayd up to 24). So, I took it to an apple store (I had to make an appt. Gosh, you think I was bringing a Lexus in for service!). I was told that the battery was fine, but apple was replacing it anyway. Of course, they had none in stock (unbelieveable!), so I will have to return later. Tech told me that 1.1 version is supposed to turn it off completely, but it seems that 1.1 has its own share problems, according to these forums.
This is the first apple product I have owned. Considering the passion of apple users toward its products, I was expecting great things. I am underwhelmed. I have a Creative Zen Micro that costs half as much, has twice the memory and works flawlessly. The trade offs are fewer features (that I don't use anyway), slightly worse FM reception, and buttons. OTherwise the Zen puts this Nano to shame.
Only issue I've seen mentioned with 1.1 was the sort order, not something I experienced.
Easy solution here, when you get the replacement do not open it and sell it on craigslist or similar site. You should be able to get good money for it.
It's possible you had one with a bum battery all along. The first one I got had very poor battery life. I took it back and exchanged it and the new one has been great. Keep in mind you are never going to get the 24 hours. I get between 14 and 18 hours per charge depending on how I use it.
I had no problems with the 1.1 update and it works like a charm. I just hold the sleep/wake button in for a few seconds and it turns off completely - do the same thing and it turns back on. A very simple software fix. I turned my Nano off and did not use it for a few days and went back and turned it on the and the battery charge was still at full.
then how come it remembers your exact location in the song? When it wakes up from regular deep sleep, it wakes to the homescreen with nothing in the playlist. Not to mention the lack of the Apple logo upon turning back on.
Because it can hold that information within the flash memory without using any battery. Otherwise every time you turned it off it would "forget" all the songs on it and you would have to resync every time you turned it off. I suspect what the "off" function of 1.1 did was essentially pressed pause and made sure that the radio was off. Leave it alone for 36 hours and it will go into deep sleep, which is why you then see the Apple logo.
Personally, I don't want it to go into deep sleep each time I turn it "off". I may want to start it up again in 15 minutes and resume where I left off. It is using only enough battery to keep the clock running when you hold it down for 2 seconds.
The 1st 5 minutes after being turned completely off, the nano keeps now playing in memory. After that, it is "Totally off", you will see an apple logo upon restarting.
