OMG guys.. get over your selves.. lol... i have an AppleTV v1 too, but guess what.. it's the end of the line for it.. oh well.. Apple doesn't want to support two platforms.. no matter how you slice it, it cost them more to continue to develop for and support two platform.. it would be nice, but they are in business.. you need to code, do testing, fixes, documentation, train support staff etc, etc, etc.. why, why would they do it?? i think the costs are more than you people realize.. appleTV v1 has been out and unchanged for 4yrs.. that's an eternity for a high tech product.. i've gotten a tonne of use out of mine.. i have my old one sitting on a shelf right now, but you know what, i think i'm going to hook it back up because i like being able to buy directly from the AppleTV.. stream a purchase etc.. although i understand the need to simplify and stream line AppleTV experience.. just by the kind of comments and question that continually popped up on this very forum.. many people just couldn't get their head around syncing, streaming, transfer purchase etc, etc..

who cares if it's technically possible.. it cost more to develop for two platforms, that's the bottom line.. the new one is just $99 bucks too.. honestly i don't understand you guys.. just buy the new one.. it's cheap.. stop being divas and get over yourselves.. lol..

ive just got off the phone with a senior support person from apple.

According to the two people i spoke to:

We should be able to stream AUDIO from any airplay enabled iOS device to our ATV1. Something is wrong that we can not.

The call was escalated from the initial support person to senior support who has now passed it on to the engineering department who will be in touch with me soon.

after having a grump about this all day at work thinking my secret weapon for easy breezy entertainment aka my version one apple tv was destined for the attic with all my other pre loved apple products I'm feeling a little less stressed now. This is because the free remote application for my ipad and iphone4 using airtunes kind of does all I need as far as music goes. But having said that the big disappointment for me was that I had got rather excited about the prospect of flicking through photos on my flat screen using the ipad or iphone. This was a dream come true for me and no doubt my clients when I watched the apple promotion earlier in the week.Although I love my mac gear I'm pretty ignorant
when it comes to how things work so perhaps there is way to this without airplay.Hey this my first post ever on anything so be kind but my blood did boil a little today

i can't get my iphone or ipad to use airplay to the atv1

As iangreen100 pointed out, Apple states in its AirPlay documentation that it is supposed to work for audio with the ATV1. My ATV1 doesn't show up as an available AirPlay device on my iPad, either, apparently as a result of a bug in the AirPlay software. Apple will need to release a bug fix for iOS 4 to resolve this problem.

I would also add my disappointment to this. I purchased a 160gb Apple TV in June after they didn't release it during their iPhone release event. I was okay with the release of Apple TV 2 as I like having the local storage but I am really disappointed that my less-than-4-month-old hardware is not obsolete. I purchased the iPod version 4 with the thought that AirPlay would work with the Apple TV version 1.

I understand all the technical reasons but I wish they would have announced this earlier or even announced it at all.

Also disappointed in this strategy - if it is a hardware limitation, there should be a substantial upgrade discount for ATV1 owners. To not support a less-than-1-year-old device with software upgrades is unheard of. And it is a bad move for loyalty sake in a market becoming crowded with other media appliance entrants such as Roku, GoogleTV, BoxeeBox, etc.

I believe in the strategy of integration between iPad, ATV, iPhone and was totally stoked about the AirPlay concept in realizing a whole home media strategy. But I really don't like being taken by obsoleting a box that I paid a premium for less than a year ago.

Yeah, streaming audio (Airplay) from iTunes on the iMac to ATV1, it's working again, it's a bug.

I tried to play iTunes content via the Remote App (iPhone), in this App I could select my Apple TV as an Airplay speaker??
After selecting this option I could stream audio content from my iMac to my ATV1, nice;-)

Since then I can select ATV1 as an Airplay speaker directly from iTunes on my iMac, even nicer;-)

Succes.

work with software so know that implementing the feature on an old branch of
of the tiger code which old appletv run
and test that it don't give any problems
could be a costly affair for apple

but problem imho is that old appletv is not really deprecated yet
as apple store in my country only sell the old appletv as non of the online
features of the new appletv are available here

and even if I could buy the new appletv by travelling to another country would not
be a good replacement for my current appletv
as when I don't use my computer it turn it off and sync everything to my appletv
so I can listen to music and watch a movie when my computer is off as then
I would not be using it

and appletv can't stream directly from my nas

the fact that the old appletv are still being sold places
and the new appletv is not being sold everywhere could
be a reason to keep it updated with features
if they stopped selling it all together it would be easier to
advocate leaving it to die software upgradewise

It appears that the new ATV is not being made available in specific regions until video becomes available in the region's iTunes store. Stores that are still selling the ATV1 are probably selling from existing inventory. I doubt that the ATV1 is still in production.

Boo Apple

I use a 1G Apple TV connected to my projector. The projector lacks HDMI so the 1G's component video output is required. To get video Airplay from my iPhone4 or iPad I would have to acquire both a 2G Apple TV AND a new projector. That's a $1500 investment in hardware in my home alone - I guess this is Apple's version of an economic stimulus package.
