Apple products seem to sell rather well despite this amazinly horrible omission. Go figure....
Meg and other iMac users:
I definately understand your frustration. However, there is a a low efforct and cost effective solution. Please refer to the following website for a solution:

I believe the download is free. Now, once you've downloaded it go back to iTunes. Right click on the book name and select "Open in Finder". Next you will open the problem using adobe digital edition.
If anyone has any other suggestions, by all means, please let me know. I've been trying to find alternatives.
The DRM security others have written about are also applicable at my college. For instance, I can "borrow" library books for a certain period of time and this program is the only one authorized to read such secure content.
Best of luck everyone.
Um, I'm not frustrated. I primarily use the Kindle app and books purchased from Amazon, as I explained a couple of times in this thread.
iBooks are also not readable in Adobe Digital Editions. The DRM prevents that. They can only be read in iBooks on an iOS device.

Sorry about the confusion on my part. I assumed frustration. The adobe digital editions statement I made, however, is correct. I can read all my iTunes books through that program on my iMac.
OS version: OS X 10.8
Adobe Digital Editions version: 1.7.2.1131

Books purchased through iBooks cannot be read with Adobe Editions. Even Adobe says this. Other books that are readible with iBooks but without Apple's DRM can be.
Then of course, there's the problem that Adobe Editions doesn't seem to be compatible with Mountain Lion.
