What does MXP and FXP means ?

Hi there,

I read thru my Canon HF M31 manual. It says that in order to record in AVCHD 1920 x 1080, I must select the to either MXP or FXP.

But it doesn't explain what MXP or FXP means ? It only says that FXP mode can record longer hours ...

But what exactly are the difference ?

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Hi -
It is two options for the bit rate your video is recorded at. From the Canon website:

So if you select MXP you are recording at the highest bitrate, 24Mbps, and consequently use up the storage fastest.
The highest bit rate would mean, roughly, the highest amount of data per frame is being recorded - which should mean higher bit rate = better picture quality.

Hope this helps.

Thanks MTD,

QUESTION 1:
Sorry for being slow, I don't quite understand what you meant by higher bit rate = more frame ? I thought in my region the Camcorder should be in PAL so the rate of the frame should be 25 frames per second, right ?

QUESTION 2:
Can FCE4 mix clips recorded in FXP and MXP into the timeline? When rendering, will those recorded in MXP be downgraded to FXP ?

Thanks

1. Bit rate is different from frame rate. Frame rate is the number of frames displayed per second in a recording, whereas bit rate is the amount of information you can get out of those frames.

2. MXP and FXP are solely a function of your camcorder. MXP will take up more space on the HDD or flash drive, and should theoretically look better too. Once ingested into FCE the footage gets transcoded into AIC at a variable bit rate in order to minimize storage space needed. Once you ingest the footage, there probably won't be a distinguishable difference in FCE. Both footage recorded in MXP and FXP can be edited on the same timeline.

Hi -
A higher bit rate per frame means there is less compression of the data per frame.
You need to shoot in both settings and decide if it makes enough of a visible difference for you to shoot at the higher data rate.
Advantage - less compression, in theory less compression artifact introduced in recording
Disadvantage - larger files size, less total recording time available for any given storage device.
