Ipod Touch 4g terrible standby battery life?

Hi I have a new ipod touch 4g. When I go to bed at night the battery level is about 80%. I put it in standby mode and then 9 hours later the battery level is less than 20%.

Is anyone else having this problem with their touch 4g? Or should I exchange it?

I just received a new one from the apple store. I will report if it is fixed. I am on a wireless N network and still have this problem. I turned off every push notification, uninstalled skype, close every app before bed and made the display so dim I can hardly see it. None of that worked - a fully charged ipod was dead in the morning. When I took it in they did a diagnostic on my ipod and he showed me how long I used it between charges and said it was clearly off. I am crossing fingers this new one will be better.

This is clearly a result of the latest software update put out by Apple. What are they trying to do? Kill our batteries faster? The new update has caused my iPod Touch to drain so fast it's not even funny. You have to turn off EVERYTHING relating to wireless, etc. If you have the wireless or bluetooth enabled, it will drain before your very eyes (just tested this, not gaming...not doing anything...just on and enabled for wi-fi).

Thanks alot Apple. How about an update that works?

Just out of curiosity, how many of you people that are still having this problem have tried resetting their network settings as suggested by another user in this thread? (Go to GENERAL settings, scroll to the bottom, click on RESET, then select "Reset Network Settings")

Other than shutting down Skype after use, and turning off "Location Services"and "Bluetooth", the only other thing I did was to RESET my network settings, and since I did, I am NO LONGER having this problem with my iPod Touch 4G!

Give it a try people. I easily get a week of standby time out of my Touch 4g, and when used continuously, it lasts more than twice as long as the 2g did. (PS: setting the screen brightness to 50% helps a LOT to extend your time while you are using it... I get about 5 hours of continuous use before it needs a recharge)

One last thing, on a recent 18 hour flight, I was able to keep my iPod working almost all the way through using this handy little portable recharger from Duracell that I bought on Amazon for $25:

*Duracell Instant USB Charger with Lithium ion battery*
http://amzn.com/B002FU6KF2

This device allowed me to charge my iPod Touch 4g from a completely discharged state to a 70%-90% SOC in about 30-45 minutes!

Just to clarify my last post...the previous version of software seemed fine. I could leave the wi-fi (settings) on all the time. It was holding an amazing charge with no apparent loss of battery life overnight when unplugged. Whatever Apple did with the 4.1 upgrade is when the problem started. Also, the upgrade installed a Game Center app which I did not and do not want on there. I notice that it is the one app that I am unable to delete.

FIX IT APPLE!

Hi Matt,

Yes, I have noticed that when I turn my iPod on (from sleep) the wifi icon is already on. However, since I RESET my network settings, I have not had any further problems with fast standby battery drain, even with WIFI left on all the time. I use my iPod on a variety of WIFI routers throughout the day, all of which are G routers. I never turn my wifi off, and I get about a week of use between charges, even with daily moderate email usage.

Thanks for the heads up on that New Trent 11,000Mha charger Jedlh! That thing looks sweet! I want one! (The Duracell stores about 1/10 as much power as that one does!)

@ daaaveymac

Cool, sounds like something that's easily correctable then.
Off to order my iTouch 4G... yay!
No prob. Re the IMP1000 suggestion, I think you'll like it 🙂

N.B. everyone...
Saw this on that engadget thread I linked to earlier (6th post up):

Simon Dixon:
+Just to be be 100% clear, the only file that has been updated is the GM build for the iPad (8C134b). All other files are still the original GM release from November 1st (8C134) so there is no need to reinstall on other devices.+

Supposedly the battery drain problem might have something to do with some type of network settings loaded from a previous iPod Touch when you set up your new iPod in iTunes, but then who knows. (Apple doesn't seem to know)

All I can tell you is that my battery drain problem has gone away after I reset my network settings, turned off Bluetooth, and turned off location services. It is also important to close Skype when not in use (by double-clicking the home button, then pressing and holding the Skype icon, then clicking on the red minus sign)

Easily correctable? Not quite... I'd only say that if I was certain this tip will correct your problem! It would certainly be nice if Apple would acknowledge this problem, identified the exact source, and recommended a solution.
