Ipod Touch 4g terrible standby battery life?

Hi I have a new ipod touch 4g. When I go to bed at night the battery level is about 80%. I put it in standby mode and then 9 hours later the battery level is less than 20%.

Is anyone else having this problem with their touch 4g? Or should I exchange it?

Alright I have the same problem with my 4g ipod touch on 4.1 iOS. The weird thing is that it started randomly one day, so I though it was my battery, but the weirder thing yet is that after trying all of these things my battery level is random at best, somtimes lasting 24 hours other times lasting as long as 72 hours. Now I have a wireless N router, I reset my network settings without any results possible, I tried getting rid of push, notifications, and facetime.

And before anyone asks, NO I had no programs running in the background. I really hope people don't come to these forums without doing this as it is in the instructions on how to operate the iDevice....

I have just updated to iOS 4.2.1 and I am installing all the programs I had on my other version on this one, but doing it not from a backup but from a FULL factory restore: IE getting everythign back from the store on my ipod, making sure nothing contaminates this new update.

ALSO unlike a lot of others I WILL report back tomorrow morning to tell you all if this worked or not. Usually I have around 20-40% reduction in battery after 8 hours of sleep. Lets hope this fixes it or the apple techs will be receiving a very annoying call tomorrow morning. see you all tomorrow!

OK guys Just as promised, I'm back and have some GREAT INFO for you all!

I have been tossing and turning all night long in anticipation for this moment and the verdict is in! AS you many remember from my last post my iPod touch 4g used to drain 20-40% over night so I did a factory restore.

This means I went into itunes clicked on restore did NOT transfer anything and updated to 4.2.1 Then at the end after it installed the update and asked if I wanted to use a backup to get my music etc back I SAID NO! and click INSTEAD on "setup as new ipod"

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!

After 8 hours and 7 minutes my battery is STILL at 100%. And this is why apparently the previous people had the right idea when they said to reset your network connection, but for some just like me something was always interfering with that reset. (anyone have their ipod touch jailbroken possibly?) I didn't but my friend did and he had the same problem I did. He used limeRa1n and both of our ipods are now FIXED.

I have also noticed that just like in other cases my wifi now DOES NOT come on untill AFTER I exit the lock screen which is WHY I THINK my battery is still at 100%.

I'll do some more testing and get back to everyone as I haven't setup my emails yet, but I do have facetime and notifications for skype and facebook running in the background.

hope this helps you guys!

Alright guys back yet again with more info and news!

As I said last post I had all of my old Apps instead and wifi running through the night 2 nights ago and after 8 hours it was still at 100% which is great, but I wasn't satisfied with that, since I did have fetch on or facebook running in the background.

As such I setup everything after posting the post above me. I now had notifications on, facebook running in the background, fetch on, and facetime also signed in. Last night I recharged my ipod touch 4g to 100% and at midnight I unplugged it and put it directly into sleep mode then went to sleep.

AND AGAIN 7 hours later as I am talking to you right now my battery is at 100% battery even with a notification from facebook waiting for me on the lock screen. These are very good results!

So if you are having the battery issue I urge you to copy down a list of your apps, copy your images / videos to a good place then restore to factory settings and setup your ipod under the "setup as new ipod" after the restore has taken place. Delete all of your previous backups under Edit>preferences>device then reinstall all your apps manually.

Keep in mind that if you have paid for apps they will be free to redownload! even though it will say the price and "buy now" after you click "buy now" and it starts to download a message will appear stating you already bought the app and that this download will be free.

HOPE THIS HELPS!

I had all problems written in this topic "brand new ipod touch 4g, won't last a day, while in sleep mode the battery was halved ...etc" i tried everything written. Didn't help, maybe improved but it won't last more than a day.
( I formated my iphone, so i uninstalled JAILBRAKE ) and that's it - wireless on non-stop everything on and this is the fourth day with my battery on 30 % 🙂 .. i am loving apple again 🙂

hope it is not a coincidence

Hi!

I have a 4G 4.2.1 os iPod touch, same problem: Battery flat by morning.

Tried all the things above, revert to original state worked, but as apps where downloaded, drain problem came again.

Final thing: full reset, only Facebook app, notifications for Facebook turn on: DRAIN PROBLEM, notifications for Facebook turned off: SOLVED (with general notifications on, wifi on all night)

Not saying that ONLY FB is faulty, but it is for sure.

Hi everyone. I think I am convinced it is a problem with the iOS. I have the 3G iPod Touch 32GB and before upgrading to 4.2.1 the battery life was great and I would only have to charge maybe every 5 to 6 days but now like so many of you, it discharges overnight. I've been reading a lot of post and I guess Apple isn't saying the iOS has a bug and looks like most of the Touch owners are actually turning their iPods completely off or putting it in Airplane mode. I tried both methods and I think I prefer the Airplane mod as it does not take as long to boot up. So I guess until Apple admits they have a problem and fix it we will have to live with one of the work-arounds. Thanks for the folks that have tried different stuff to figure our a work-around and now we need to get on Apple to fix it for good.

There might be a bug in the OS but you should realize that most iPod users, myself included, haven't had this problem at all and aren't turning off features, WiFi, or shutting down their iPod to avoid it.

There appears to be an environmental factor associated with this problem in some interaction with iOS 4. Many causes have been suggested here and there could be more than one such cause. One cause could be misbehaving routers which prevent the iPod from placing WiFi in a low-power consumption mode. This might be associated with the use of certain Apps.

The best you can do right now is to report your problem with details on your environment (Apps used, router type and firmware level, etc.) to Apple at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html.

It is very possible that it can be a variable issue but I noticed myself that my ipod touch 4g was not connected to any wifi for a few days and I had the wifi off and the battery was still having a mild issue with the drain but it seems worse when connected constantly to a wifi. I also learned that that if you turn on airplane mode and then turn wifi on again it should help.

I am afraid to say this, but my problem went away a couple of weeks ago. I have been hesitant to post because I don't know what I did and I am afraid it will come back. I had upgraded to 4.2, but that did not fix it. The problem continued well after the update. I am now wondering if it was an application as I don't really pay much attention to the numerous app updates we get. I wish I was more help and I really hope it doesn’t come back because I won’t know what to do.
I don’t want to rub it in, but it is really nice to have my iPod back.

This is NOT SOLVED. I have a new 8gig 4th gen Touch purchased at the beginning of Feb 2011 with iOS 4.2.1 from the factory. I have tried everything listed in this and other threads including a full reset & manual reloading of apps, and nothing will turn off the WiFi except Airplane mode. If I put in standby without the Airplane mode, the battery will be dead in 7 - 9 hours. I've tried my router in N only mode, mixed N & G, & G only: makes NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER. At least if I reset the router (breaking the connection) while the iPod is in standby, it doesn't reconnect to the network until it is awakened from standby.

I'm resigned to having to use the Airplane mode for now but it's a lame work around. We need the option to easily kill WiFi as we enter standby.

hello people

i had the same issue with the battery life on ipod 4g. i did what most people have said, turned off notifications and turned off location services. i checked my installed apps for anything push and turned them off. but i also went into mail settings and turned fetch new data off (push off and checkmark on manually). if you read the box it says "the schedule below is used when push is off or for applications which do not support push." i think the default was 15 minutes. it says in a disclaimer to fetch less frequently to save battery life... and its default to the worst battery life setting... i think, well duh, that might be key. i have battery life now the same as my ipod 2g. i am not using airplane mode.

hope this helps someone. if it was already posted in this thread, well my hats off to ya as well...
