"server does not allow relaying" email error

Since upgrading to iPhone 4, sending an email always results in the error message "A copy has been placed in your outbox. The recipient "......@...." was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying. This happens regardless of the recipent. It also happens to a friend of mine who still has the iPhone 3G but has updated software. HELP PLEASE.

iPhone 4, iOS 4

Hi Trigcxx

Thank you very much for your solution to fixing this error. I followed the exact steps to fix the error and it worked!! I had read and tried the previous solutions prior to reaching your post, but none worked!! I use AOL and the problem with the other solutions was that they were telling you to turn the primary server on, and that wasn't working. As you suggested, I turned it off and then created the smtp server and it worked!! For months I couldn't send emails only receive. I have to say though, this problem only started after I upgraded to OS 5.0.1!!!

Thanks again

Regards

Had same issue -EASY FIX:

Go into SETTINGS--MAIL,CONTACTS,CALENDARS--Click on Account--Click on account name--under "Outgoing Mail Server" click on the name of your outgoing mail server--click on the name of your primary server--add your username and password--verify authentication type (probably password)---click "Done"

Try forwarding email from account and it should now work!

I think the solution to this problem also depends on what phone network you are on. There seems to be a lot of people who AOL who have found the solution by putting in the username and password details on the outgoing server section. That must be a requirement for AOL, and other networks.

The solution for me wasn't to put my username and password in the outgoing server section as well as the incoming server, but to upgrade to iOS5.

I haven't had a problem since.
