iPod Touch 4th Gen Battery Issue

My iPod Touch 4th gen drains the battery while sitting idle overnight. I listen to it all day at work with normal battery usage. When I got home I charged my touch to 100% then left it disconnected in standby mode overnight and in the morning the it is down to 50%. I checked and there are no apps running in the background. What on earth is happening? I also have a 3rd Gen Touch, with all the same apps and it does not do this.

I have 2 4th gen Touch and they are both behaving the same way.

Any ideas?

Is it possible that FaceTime is polling or something?

It seems as though the batteries in these models are not up to the task the device puts on them. My 64GB iPog 4G was just over a year old when I noticed the battery began die faster and faster with each passing day. Within another month I could not use my iPod at all, unless it was plugged in. I think it's ridiculous. I have never complained about paying a premium price for Apple brand products because they used to be relatively problem free and they lasted for years. I still have my 2nd Gen iPod it's 10 yrs old and working fine. I did have to replace the battery once but that was after 5 years of use. At that point I felt I had gotten my money's worth out of the battery but 13 months is unacceptable for a $375 product. Apple has had class action suits against it for other battery related issues. Apparently the suits didn't teach them any lasting lessons. Yesterday I replaced the battery in my 4th Gen touch. I took the chance and did it myself. It's not for the faint of heart to do, but considering I bought the battery for $8 shipped from E-bay and Apple wants $80. For me it was worth it. I did end up breaking the Power/Volume cable but that cost me $4 to buy, so I'm still way ahead of the game.

There is no reason they have to make that battery so hard to replace. A simple removable back plate and a plug in battery would make it a 10 min job without the risk of destroying other parts in the device. Apple products used to be user friendly from a software and hardware standpoint. Sorry Apple but I'm becoming disillusioned with the way you guys are engineering your products now. Sleek design is nice but I wouldn't mind seeing a few screw heads on the back if it means I can get it serviced without paying 9X the part price for your service fee. If the battery only lasts a year it could easily cost more for battery replacements, in 5 years than the device originally costs.

I'm not impressed with the battery on my 4th gen touch either. I LOVE the device, but I really shouldn't have to charge the thing daily. And I never understand the recommendations of "turn off wi-fi, turn off bluetooth, put in airplane mode, turn off location, etc". Why am I paying for all these features if it's expected that the users turn everything off to have even halfway decent(in comparison) battery life?

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.

Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight. Admittedly the labeling is hard to read but, if you use a magnifier and squint your eyes, you'll see "Output 5.1V, 2.1A." The symbol between volts and amps is the symbol for DC. Do NOT use an iPhone charger. Do NOT use an iPod charger. Do NOT use a computer's USB port. Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear). An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.

I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem. I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.

According to Apple:

Use Your iPad Regularly

For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

Toyworks11, Can you please tell me do you know what a Mophie is? I bought my ipod 4th generatopn touch about a year ago. I also bought a Griffith charger. Whe it goes down. I charge it up again. It will play music ONLY! No music videos. Because it will only pl;ay 4 hours on music only. I do not use the thing for anything other than music. I would love to be able to watch music videos. But cannot because of the battery juice just being sucked out of it. I agree with some of the others here who say the battery's suck. BIG TIME! I bought the ipod to be able to watch music videos. And kick back and just listen to music. They send me a Mophie because I bought an extra warrenty. The Mophie charges it up when the ipod battery goes dead. But the Mophie is slow to charge. And very bulky. I mean we pay big money fot their products. And for what? I bought it to make me happy and it is making me miserable. My husband says the apple products are so much better than other brands. If so the Mp3's and Ipods are a huge disapointment. I worked with a great thechnian. And he turner everything in the back ground I did not need or want. It stil plays only 4 hours. No music videos either. If I had known the thing was going to make me miserable, I would not have bought it. I guess you could go to apple store and look up Mopphie. But I don't think you will like it. I mean if you are out somewhere and the battery goes dead what are you going to do? Lug this heavy Mophie aroud with you? I wish all of us together could get together and make thim give us either our money back. And if not a new ipod. Problem is , It will probably the same junk again. It sounds to me like none of the battery's are any good. Thanks nervous as heck to keep charging the dumb ipod up 2 or 3 times a day. Sherry

I really would like to help, but I have to say I found no reasonable fix for the crappy battery they have in these things. It's not only the iPod, it's the same thing in my iPhone 4. I hate having to carry a charger with me for a 1 day trip. it's rediculous.

There is one solution, but you can't carry it around with you all day. You can buy a cheap 12v car jumper pack with 120v inverter, USB port, and 12v outlets. That way you can charge 3 differnt ways /12volt plug / 115v plug / or USB I have seen these units for under $50.00 and they would charge and run your iPod for weeks on end. click on link

Dude, dont worry, it's not a permanent problem, I fixed it and it is very easy. All you have to do is follow the following 2 steps:

1) I have a game called Deer Hunter 2012 and if u want to play a mission u have to use up energy which is limited and if they are all used up the game processes to regain them back even when not working in the background and it will send u a notification overnight when completed this drains the battery.

2) if you have Games like these, delete them this fixed mine hope it fixes urs.

I have a bad problem with my iPod Touch 4th Gen. I have had it for two years, still works fine, but recently i've tried charging it, but it doesn't charge, it's completely dead, and has the screen where it says its charging but like I said, it's still dead, I've left it out all day, over night, i've left it alone for 2-3 days, come back to charge it, still dead. Ive tried using different cords, computers, and even docing stations, yet none of those work. This is the second time this has happened, I've been thinking about just replacing the battery, but will it just be cheaper to purchase a new one, or fix my old one? Please help! If you have any ideas about what to do, please contact me at ctkasel@gmail.com.

I have an ipod touch 4th generation 32, but the battery is getting shorter and shorter. I called the store to ask if they would replace the battery. They would not tell me. They made me come in for an appointment and at the store, the guy said they can't replace or battery or wont. They suggested I trade mine in and pay 149 dollars to buy someone elses old ipod touch 4th generation, instead of just changing the battery in mine. There is like no way, I would not be any better off with an old used ipod, unless it had a fresh battery. What is wrong with them Apple? It is bad for the environment to throw away perfectly good items. Beside I want mine not someone elses. If I buy a new one I want to know this will not happen, so I called apple and they were not helpful at all. They refuse to address battery issue in pod and fail to acknowlege that there is any problem. (The spell is broken here and I can't copy paste this post either, bad html.) I have 32 but it does not even fit all music, if anything it has too little space, so why would I buy the 16, and if I was buying 64, I would want to know that the battery is improved. Also it constandly falls off the recharger. The plug is too lose and just touching it unplugs it from the recharger. I have to keep it on the recharger so often, which only makes the situation worse. So, now instead I can use the iphone or the ipad but it is not really want I want, because iphone 5 has a short batter to begin with. The ipad has a long battery but it sort of too big and chunky to use at night. But, beggers can't be chossers. This is all because Steve Jobs died, seriously when he was alive, they never acted liked this and my issues were always addressed. Why did he not treat his cancer aggressviely? This is totally off subject, but my husband has cancer and his treatment is working, I mean extending his life.

I have a really nice expensive screen protector. They are making a huge profit buying these things for just a few bucks and selling them to people like me, when the battery issue is not my fault. I have seen them for 99 cents on ebay just now. I would like my same devise with a battery replaced and would pay a reasonable amount for the time and effort, say 40 dollars sounds fair to me. 149 is not fair, why not just say 150, more then half the cost of new device, plus they intend to take my ipod away and make me wait for an unknown amount of time for someelese ipod. And the plug falls out of the device when I have to recharge it during the night. It won't stay in because the hole has gotten weak. I have boughten a large number of cords for it and it makes no difference. I am reduced to putting myself in danger of an electric fire because of this issue. It can't last the whole night without a recharge. Normally I don't listen all night, but it can only go about an hour with recharge even if the screen is off.
