3G: v4.1 is still not a fix ?

Hi guys,

I have just come back after a week and checked the forums. I can see that 4.1 is still not a fix for the 3G. Even those who have some success with it report only 85-90% recover back to the speed we had with 3.1.3.

Unfortunately not enough people who have gone to 4.1 have come back and reported their experience now that a week has passed .. has it slowed way down as 4.0.1 did ?

I downgraded back to 3.1.3 a couple of months ago after my 3G slowed to a crawl despite every possible fix being tried.

*From the evidence here 3.1.3 is the limit for the 3G phone.*

Comments ?

I didn't really have major problems with 4.01, but I have noticed significant improvements with 4.1. Compared to 3.1.3, everything seems to be on par except that app store still takes longer to load.

I've also had problems with 3G signal strength since updating to 4.1 (I didn't have this problem with 4.01). I'm not sure if this is a iOS issue or a Rogers issue. Wifi seems to be fine.

After one week of OS4.1 upgrade my phone has started to slow down more than ever. Today being the worst day. when I attempt to power down, then phone pauses for 5 seconds, goes to the search page for about 3 seconds, takes a screen shot, then pauses another 3 seconds before I see the Apple.

Has anyone tried reinstalling as a new device? This worked with previous upgrades.

My phone became almost useless after I first upgraded to iOS 4. I get no service, my phone turns itself off and displays the black screen with the white apple all the time. It tells me I need to restore which I have done several times and therefore upgraded to 4.01 and then 4.1. Same problems. Itunes will take a year before it recognizes my phone is plugged in and has even told me that there is no sim card in the phone when of course there is! I tried to downgrade, but apple makes it so hard! I just want to smash my phone with a hammer!

I couldn't take all the problems with my 3G ...i had tried everything i possibly could. Made an appointment at the Genius bar yesterday told him everything i had tried plus all the problems especially the battery. He said that's not acceptable, i want you to leave here with a working phone so he replaced my 3G with a brand new one!
I did say what happens if i have the same problems with this one, he was quite confident that wont happen. Got home & was delighted to see it had 3.1.3 on it!! No, i didn't update to 4.1... no chance!
Glad i had the extended warranty on it, not sure what would have happened if i didn't.

After 4.0 ruined my phone I went back to 3.1.3 a while ago. I took the upgrade to 4.1 last night and did not "restore as new". Switching between tasks is about %90 as fast but so far everything works. I did notice that my music would mute for a short moment when switching from ipod to Safari.

The only reason I took the upgrade is to have multiple exchange accounts for work, otherwise I would have left it alone.

Hi Guys,

What is clear from feedback on this thread and elsewhere on the web - 4.01 does not come near a fix and for most users it is still unacceptable.

Getting back to what a few experience as 90% of performance is just not good enough - and I am NOT an Apple basher, quite the opposite.

As someone who downgraded to 3.1.3 I urge all 3G users to stay on 3.1.3 or to downgrade back to 3.1.3. It is easy and straight forward and there are a number of good methods on the web. That's not to say it is totally problem free, but a small amount of extra work is well worth the lightening speed of 3.1.3 back again.

Personally I don't see the new functionality of 4.1 worth the nightmare performance. Would I like folders and one email IN box ? Sure. But I prefer a phone that works properly a lot more.

So I suggest 3.1.3 and we wait until we can afford a brand new iPhone.

Saying you can't ignore 4.x isn't quite right.

The phone won't stop working.
The apps won't stop working

browser updates? Would be bug fixes of a running app. No earth shaking features.
(granted new apps will need 4x)

You will just be stuck where your at. And is that a bad place? If so then Apple has been lying to us for the last 3 years or so.

Security? I don't do anything sensitive on my phone so hack away!
Let me ask you, do yo buy a new Mac ever 6 months when Apple updates them?

I'm fine with it as-is @3.1.3 until Android gets a bit more mature, then I'm dumping the iPhoney

(Palm's syncing was WAY better 10 years ago. Conduits for the apps to sync on a single device sync, not this apple BS of sync the phone. now sync DocsToG, now this app , now that app. And Palm could also sync via cable, BT or WiFi or even a modem 10 years ago! Hey Apple, join the 21st Century)

Hi, Having decided to go to the trouble and risk of downgrading to 3.1.3 I discovered that there can be problems for those of us using 64 bit versions of Windows 7 so I decided to try upgrading to v4.1 from v4.01 first just to see if it would speed up my iPhone 3G. It had been very slow ever since I upgraded and although the tricks of performing a double reset had helped for a short while the phone soon became very slow again. Well, I have just finished upgrading to v4.1 and I can report that the phone now 'flies' again! So long as it stays like this I will be quite happy.

Having the same problems on my GF's 8gb 3G. It was very sluggish after 4.0, 4.0.1, and now after 4.1. There wasn't even a period of somewhat acceptable speed and usability - It was actually slower than it was with 4.0.1. I'm going to try (again) a full restore and reinstall, and clicking off the spotlight search capabilities. If this doesn't get results we will be taking it to the genius bar, as the phone is pretty much unusable.

I'll post an update here when we're finished.

I'd say 0% improvement. My calendar is still functionally unusable. Maybe I'm having fewer crashes, but since it basically it just a phone and the apps are too slow to use, it really doesn't matter doesn't it. Why doesn't apple provide us with a software that worked (3.x)? I really feel that Apple stole my Iphone and won't give it back unless I buy a new one. This is a ripoff beyond compare.
