3G: v4.1 is still not a fix ?

Hi guys,

I have just come back after a week and checked the forums. I can see that 4.1 is still not a fix for the 3G. Even those who have some success with it report only 85-90% recover back to the speed we had with 3.1.3.

Unfortunately not enough people who have gone to 4.1 have come back and reported their experience now that a week has passed .. has it slowed way down as 4.0.1 did ?

I downgraded back to 3.1.3 a couple of months ago after my 3G slowed to a crawl despite every possible fix being tried.

*From the evidence here 3.1.3 is the limit for the 3G phone.*

With the current update, my Iphone 3G shows 4 small art images where only one should be! The thing is that it seems to lump a certain genres art instead of the albums art work. Example: Darwin Daniels' journey, shows the art work of George Michael's Patience, Michael Jackson's Invincible, Tom Jones, and Whitney Houston... This occurs wether it's from iTunes or a CD.

I also get this phenomenon with videos. It is showing various album artwork. This is super annoying. It does show the correct art in Cover Flow mode.

Otherwise, the phone is running better with the latest update, just not as reliably.

Well, disabling the Spotlight search was somewhat successful, but the phone still lags when opening apps like Facebook, mail or text. Also, the main photo album seems to have about 1/3 of the photos blacked out. The space is there where the photos should be, but it's just black. New photos taken or saved to the device appear in the album beneath the blacked out portion as if the photos are there. We're considering a stop at the Genius Bar to see about getting a replacement phone.

I think I like the majority of 3G users - the improvement with 4.` was modest at best. Like others have experienced, my 3G will periodically just stop responding for 10-20 seconds (which is an eternity when you're looking at the thing in your palm), then pick up and go on. That's actually quite annoying.

I stand by my previous comment, revised as such:

iOS4.0.x = Windows Vista
iOS4.1 = Windows 6.2

All you Apple defenders can go ahead and bash me for that one, if you like, but I stand by it as a fair analogy.... (i.e., make a "cool new OS" GA, but screw people if they're not running (nearly) brand new latest/greatest hardware to support it). At least Microsoft gave people the option to continue/go back to XP.

My 3g is still jacked up after the "new" new update, toggling airplane mode, resetting etc. The apps load faster than they did but my reception still *****.

I've been to Apple store ("The 3g's have had some problems with the i4 software...") and to AT&T ("Some of the 3g's have had some issues. You need to contact Apple")

My wife and I bought our phones same day, same place. Iphone was the best piece of tech gear I ever owned. Until I updated the software. Now its unreliable and frustrating. There should have been a warning in itunes. "3G owners! Don't Do It!"

Its like Apple installed malware on my phone and won't take responsibility. My wife's phone works fine. She didn't update hers. We can be in the same room and she'll have reception and internet. Her signal strength shows all bars, mine shows one bar.

I've talked to support three times. I did everything they told me to do, and this morning I was told my best bet was to try and buy a refurb from ATT. Their partner in profit.

ATT let me know that as a valued customer I was eligible for an update to i4 for only $199. If I was really a valued customer, they wouldn't be trying to make me buy my way out of Apple's problem.

I had zero problems with my phone until I updated it. Now the responsible party wants me to buy another phone to make the problem go away. Its infuriating.

I am out of contract with ATT. But why take on another contract with a shady service provider that stands by a defective product?

Last week I downloaded the 4.1 update. Previously I had 3.1.3. Never downloaded v4.0.1 or 4.0.2 because of all the immediate moans from 3g users.

So, last week I had figured that surely by now, Apple would have ironed out whatever was causing complications in the latest software for 3G users.

Wrong, so wrong.

Since my update from 3.1.3 to 4.1:

Texting is maddening. The text app frequently takes 5-10 second to even open ITFP. Once I click on a text thread to reply to something, it's several seconds of tapping in the typing field before I can get the keyboard to appear. Once I get there, further complications await as the random delay of text input drives me pretty mad. Sometimes I will type several words and then glance up and see that they haven't even appeared yet and then there will finally come this march of letters across the screen. This really ***** when you send hundreds of texts per day! Hate it so much.

The camera takes forever to load. From the moment I decide that I want to take a photo until the moment where the phone will actually let is never less than like 20 seconds.

There's some other things too but none as bad as the above.

On a positive note though, reception is actually improved and I love that! There are some areas I'll go where previously I got either no or intermittent signal. So, very nice there.

Anyway, called Apple tonight actually...

The rep said that they had had tons of calls from 3G users about this very same issue with 4.1. As is my previous experience with Apple support, the rep was cool and everything and offered some suggestions. The phone is 2 years old I think now so I was worried that I wouldn't even be able to talk to anyone with out giving a credit card # [via no Applecare.]

I apologize that I don't have my notes with me on this so it's not so well communicated here but the rep said that pretty much I needed to restore my phone but that when I do I must restore it from scratch. Something about how I should make sure that I have all the things I need from my phone saved to my computer and to not restore from an existing backup or something. Basically he said that there would be an option to select that I would like to setup my phone as if I just got it.

He was honest and told me that the 4.1 update, even after doing this, would never be quite as fast as 3.1.3.

Will give it a try tomorrow.

My friend and I both installed 4.1 on a 3G. He notices a real performance improvement but I don't. Starting the App store (with the same 54 Mbps Wifi network) takes 12 seconds for me and 7 seconds for him.
Only explanation we can think of is that he reinstalled OS 3.? before. This way he emptied his Iphone memory completely. Does anyone know more about this and how you can do this?

After being on the road for a few days and using my phone more and in different situation, my experience with 4.1 is now been downgraded. Not that it was high to begin with, but I was giving it the benefit of the doubt. Between things like being sticky between switching apps to occasional pauses, this is now down to being about less than 5% better for me than 4.0x. And 5% is generous. Pretty disappointing after waiting for a fix.

Problems with 4.1:

1) Often can't open the phone when there's a phone call.
2) Typing won't initialize for 60 seconds or more. Press keys, (20 sec wait),audible series of clicks,(wait 20 secs), visible signs of typing appear.
3) It appears that ATT will do anything to prevent connection. Retrieving two or three short emails is a 5-10 minute task. iPhone, is prompt to check for wireless connections; when this dialog is dismissed, the time can be counted in minutes before a connection is made to cell service (this is with 4-5 bars).
4) Apps hang periodically.

All in all the phone is a huge disappointment both in philosophy of operation (doing everything possible to discourage cell data use) and execution. I owned the first iPhone weeks after its release. The 3G is my second phone. The experience gets more dismal by the month (and OS update release).

Guys!
From all I read here, these are NOT problems or issues. These are feature to help enjoy the iPhone experience.

60 seconds before typing in a text? That gives you more time to enjoy the full iPhone experience.

And its ALL YOUR FAULT! You guys should have done your research. If you did, you wouldn't have upgraded to enjoy these new features. (this was the fanboy response I got when I complained there was no cut-n-paste. Do I need to ask Chevy if the car turn left also? Some things are assumed.)

Plus the 3G is like 2 years old now (from the end of production) C'mon, its OLD. Do you expect a car manufacturer to still make parts and full support a 2 year old car? pa-lease.

Yes, all sarcasm. The despicable part of this dibocal is that Apple REFUSES to acknowledge there are ANY problems, and provide a way to go back to 3.1.3.
Its a ego thing. If Apple came up with that (which would make a lot of CUSTOMERS happy (or at least content), it would be guilt by default and show that Apple can make a mistake and not everything they do is all roses)

Don't forget it took until v3.0 to get cut-n-paste into 'the most advanced smart phone in the world (that won't do MMS messaging (at the time))'

(I've never considered it a smart phone, I considered it a clever phone at best, or the coolest POS out there)

Apple has at least turned a blind eye to the hacks out there on how to go back.

(I'm sure this will get deleted)

Mud, I have had the exact same treatment from Apple concerning the initial upgrade to ios 4.0.

The Genius bar, and Apple Care both made me feel stupid for trusting this update. Any of the employees that owned a 3G (because I would ask - "I mean, isn't yours messed up now?") would all say "oh well I knew not to upgrade it. Yeah, you gotta read about Apple updates and ask around before you ever accept them."

So the Genius bar and Apple Care both told me not to ever upgrade my 3G. This was Apple's solution for me. The Genius Bar (in Nashville, TN) told me

"Maybe you should just put up with it for a while until Apple comes out with something that isn't so bad."

I was shocked (and so were the Apple Care representatives when I asked if this was Apple's official policy on the upgrade) but then ultimately I'm not sure what I expected from an Apple Store with such poor reviews.

Vince,

I'm surprised an Apple store told you it was junk. Heads should roll there (based on Apple)

I went in to exchange the power adapter, the ones that were on recall. They wanted my phone so they could get the serial number. I refused. I saw NO reason to give them my phone. The phone is fine, the power adapter was defective and a possible fire hazard. Did they think I was making these things in my basement and trying to exchange them all over the country? And I'm only allowed one exchange? What if I bought a spare for traveling? I'd get stuck with that defective/dangerous product, just because I bought it?

I love my mac, and you will have to pry it from my dead cold hands. But I am far from an Apple fan. (was ticked off that I can't load an older OS onto a Mac that came with a newer version. Got forced to upgrade software and hardware)

Apple NEEDS to provide a go-back FEATURE for this very hit and miss iOS.

I think Apple is spreading itself too thin. Stop innovating new problems and start fixing the probs you already have.

3G: v4.1 is still not a fix ?
