3G: v4.1 is still not a fix ?

Hi guys,

I have just come back after a week and checked the forums. I can see that 4.1 is still not a fix for the 3G. Even those who have some success with it report only 85-90% recover back to the speed we had with 3.1.3.

Unfortunately not enough people who have gone to 4.1 have come back and reported their experience now that a week has passed .. has it slowed way down as 4.0.1 did ?

I downgraded back to 3.1.3 a couple of months ago after my 3G slowed to a crawl despite every possible fix being tried.

*From the evidence here 3.1.3 is the limit for the 3G phone.*

Comments ?

I too updated to 4.0, then because it was such a dog came back looking for an update. Updated to 4.1. Performance is much better, however... Now my battery drains twice a day and sometimes it doesn't even tell me the battery is low. It shows full and then all the sudden my phone dies. This is a bad problem. I do not have wifi running or bluetooth so the only thing dragging it down would be the 3G piece and if I can't run that then I might as well go get a flip phone that I only use for making phone calls. It would be really nice if Apple would test run these **** upgrades before shoving them out to the public. I would love to upgrade to an I4, however, the bugs they are reporting are an issue for me.

Just to add to the statics, but I have the 3G and have updated to 4.1 and still major problems, establish apps like Google still crashing and s l o o o w missing calls from bad swipes, etc.. My phone is not a fun toy like an iPod it is used and NEEDED for work. My experience with this whole fiasco almost guarantees that I will never be able to buy another iPhone. Yes it was a great instrument but the carpenter doesn't use a hammer that continually has this many bugs. "Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice shame on me"

Arch, you are exactly right. I love the iPhone when it works as it should, but if you are punished for trusting the manufacturer, why would you ever buy from them again? I feel like such an idiot for using the iPhone now. I do not own my iPhone, Apple does. If I want to use it in anyway that I want (say for example, try an update and then decide that it didnt improve my experience), either they have to give me permission or they cut you off completely.

This experience, on top of their newly filed traitorware patent for the next iPhone, and the fact that they are FoxConn's biggest customer, has assured that I will never buy another Apple product again.

It is clear 3.1.3 is the BEST system for the 3G and the iOS4 series is NOT suitable.

I am as upset as anyone about this. But it is hysterical and unjustified to try to use this as a stick to bash Apple and swear off them. Apple is by the far the best producer of the best devices in the world. Deny yourself if you like. I won't.

I suffered the problem for two weeks. I then acted. I followed the simple online instructions to downgrade to 3.1.3 and it's all fine.

I will continue to love my MacBookPro, iMac and other Apple products.

I will look forward to getting the sweet new iPhone4 or 5. Life moves on.

Howard, I think the problem is more of Apple's additude towards it. Apple makes NO mistakes, or fails at ANYTHING.

Apple screwed up, but refuses to admit it and/or make good.

Apple should offer a go-back solution. It shouldn't be some hack from some other party.

And that go-back should have always been in place for all upgrades. Its disgraceful and arrogant of Apple to think that the upgrade will be perfect for everyone, that going back would just be silly and useless. We are at 3 shots from Apple and still no joy. What does that tell people? Especially if the iPhone 3G was their first Apple product. How would you feel?

Apple screwed up and its FINE to bash them for it and doing noting about it. Swearing off iPhones? No prob there. Swearing off Apple may be a bit much.

This is the biggest marketing and technical screwup from Apple I have ever seen.

As I 3G user, OS4 is pretty much of no value, but they encouraged you to upgrade for a better experience and then made a lot of customers mad...

Even AT&T is annoyed with this mess, and usually they are the ones that have problems. But this one is ALL APPLE dumplings.

I want my OS3 back or I will never consider a new IPhone!!

In the greater scheme of things I believe it is a minor screwup, though an annoying one. I say that after experiencing decades of Microsoft MAJOR screw ups that needed specialist and expensive solutions.

The solution is also straight forward and easy. *Downgrade to 3.1.3*. Anyone can do it, easily. Google it. I recommend the LifeHacker.com version which a monkey could do. Print out the instructions and follow them exactly.

It IS a major screw up. Anything that does this much damage is major. Most of these poor people have "The greatest smart phone EVER" that runs so slow you can time stuff on a sundial! I don't consider that minor. Nor do I feel others will either.

And MORE importantly, why does anyone need to google the fix to get back to 3.1.3?????
Why doesn't Apple provide this? Its their locked down phone, their software and their install tools. The answer is simple and I have stated it. Its Apple's ego. The will never admit the slightest failure. Never have, never will.

People feel screwed over with latest greatest iOS, only to find its horrible. Now to go elsewhere for a fix (LOL! fix is going to the old tired OS) by a third party may scare people away since the phone is already screwed up by 'official' updates.

Just answer me why can't Apple provide the 3.1.3 solution? Call them and they will tell you it can't be done. So I guess the hackers are WAY smarter then anyone at Apple.

You seem quick to trounce on M$, but give Apple a free ride on screw ups. That is a BIG reason why apple fan-boys are hated and disregarded outside the tiny apple world.

Apple needs to step up to the plate and be a MAN and do the right thing. Offer an official 3.1.3 restore solution for people.

Sep 23, 2010 2:36 PM in response to MudShark

You say I am quick to trounce on Microsoft ? maybe that's because I have 25 years or more experience of fixing their crap and having to pay a lot of money for the pleasure. I also have more than 15 years experience of Mac systems and have never had trouble with them.

You're just irrational and hysterical and I don't buy into it at all.

You can fix the problem in less than an hour but you clearly can't be arsed.

Sep 23, 2010 2:42 PM in response to MudShark

What do you mean 'Most of' when ALL of those I know personally have upgraded to 4.1 and are happy with the result.

"Just answer me why can't Apple provide the 3.1.3 solution? Call them and they will tell you it can't be done. So I guess the hackers are WAY smarter then anyone at Apple."

Easy! 3.1.3 has been but at risk of allowing iPhones to be hijacked by hackers through the pdf compromise, so in my book, anyone suggesting sticking with or downgrading to 3.1.3 is either stupid or associated with hackers, making them more dumb than a dumb-thing anyway! Just a personal view. 😉

Sep 23, 2010 2:48 PM in response to RestlessFool

The portion of 3G users who have reported being happy is minuscule across all forums I have read in the last few weeks. No one has reported speeds returning to 3.1.3 for example. So I don't buy that.

The PDF security issue is an infinitesimal issue. As long as people don't open a PDF document from someone why don't know they have one in a billion chance of having problem.

3.1.3 is clearly the place to stay for 3G users until we move on to the iPhone4.

You know what? Happy people don't post on a forum about being unhappy and needing help, so that explains that one. (I forgot to mention those who post on any forum only in order to get a reaction or who try to help others)

This is actually the problem!!! You don't appear to grasp that whenever you open a web-page (ANY web-page) you have NO idea what is happening 'under the covers' and what other files are being referenced and whether there is a link to an improperly-crafted pdf file that does nothing APART from giving an 'in' to the hacker!!!!

I find it unbelievable that the significance of this hasn't been grasped/understood by the 'must downgrade to 3.1.3' brigade - unless of course the 'must downgrade to 3.1.3' brigade are associated with the hackers themselves, perhaps?

Sep 23, 2010 3:39 PM in response to Howardsweb

Dreaded upgrading to 4. But Apple requires this because apps are not compatible with older versions. Makes me mad. Anyway, upgraded from 3.1.3 to 4.1. Setup phone as new. Reloaded, not restored, apps and contacts. Phone works just as quick and has MUCH improved battery life. Kind of like having to reload Windows every once in a while to remove all the crap. Only downside is resetting mail, app, etc.
