3G: v4.1 is still not a fix ?

Hi guys,

I have just come back after a week and checked the forums. I can see that 4.1 is still not a fix for the 3G. Even those who have some success with it report only 85-90% recover back to the speed we had with 3.1.3.

Unfortunately not enough people who have gone to 4.1 have come back and reported their experience now that a week has passed .. has it slowed way down as 4.0.1 did ?

I downgraded back to 3.1.3 a couple of months ago after my 3G slowed to a crawl despite every possible fix being tried.

*From the evidence here 3.1.3 is the limit for the 3G phone.*

Comments ?

Well guess what? There ARE good reports of happy 4.1 users here. (almost enough to make me try. But the crapshoot odds I can't afford. I run a biz and need the phone to work day in and day out.

Me? I NEVER left 3.1.3 Learned my lesson with my original 2.x (3G) and its massive limits for the most advanced smart phone (my palm (OS) based Treo 680 did WAY more out of the box then the iPhoney did; sans the cool unproductive glitz)

I've also dealt with M$'s BS (after trying the original mini just to see what its all about, I never looked back.) But that doesn't mean Apple does everyting perfect. They had over 20 years of PC work at that point.
Been dealing with PC's (not IBM compat, but personal computers in general; think C/PM) since before DOS existed myself.

@RestfulFool. ONE single glitch that might happen? a PDF might comprimise my iPhoney, so drag it down to crawl? Sounds like installing Norton AV software. Yep. will protect my system from a possible problem/threat at the cost of being useful. If I never turn on the phone, I won't have any problems either. That a good idea?
And I'm POSSITIVE reading a PDF from an Apple, Adobe, M$ site WILL infect my iPhone. Gee Apple didn't find this prob in 3 rounds of its OS? AND they can't patch 3.1.3 just to fix the PDF issue? It can ONLY be done via an iOS upgrade to 4.x? I call BS!
That patch was to prevent jailbeaks, and thats it. Yes it could lead to nefarious uses, but it doesn't HAVE to and every PDF won't jailbreak your phone.

And who is Apple to decide what OS level I need (on a phone I own(?) )
I had this same prob with a Mac. I needed an older version of the OS for software and hardware crucial to my biz. If I bought a new Mac, I was NOT able to downgrade. Gee, wonder what the shareholders (the true drive of any public company) would think about a guy who is OK forgoing a few features to buy an overpriced computer, but won't because he isn't allowed to lose those festures?

Guess what? Apple lost a sale because of it.

Where have you been? A pdf MIGHT allow another party to take control of your iPhone and use it for spamming but also might let them take control of your iPhone and use it for purchasing via simply visiting web-sites that charge YOU premium-rates via your phone usage for access.

They're the simplest effects of a 'compromised' iPhone, but the worst is much worse. Apparently 'Google is your friend' if you want to know, so give it a check! 😉

You're right, it's not Apple who decides whether or not that you upgrade, but it's you who decides whether or not to bear the consequences of your decision based on the information provided! 😉

If Apple lost a sale because of it then it's just possible that perhaps they're happy to have lost custom because of it too? 😉

Yes the bad PDF can do ALL those things. But it doesn't HAVE to. Hang around the seedy area of a city and you might get mugged but may not either.
Buyer beware.

This country (US) is all up in arms with the 'stupid police' Protect everyone from everything. Chuck Darwin would disagree. Does better for the common good of society and its IQ.

And as far as the lost sale. Apple doesn't answer to me, or Apple, or SJ. Being a public company, it answers to its shareholders.

Shareholders don't like lost revenue at all (especially from dumb nonsense decisions)

I agree completely Mud, with one exception; Jobs, when defending the iPhone 4 anntennae, said "First, we are not perfect, and do not claim to be."

Although, as you said, most of their policies imply the opposite.

The real problem with not allowing someone to go back to a previous operating system is that it voids your warranty with the phone. I bought the 3G one month before OS4 came out. I went into the Apple store and the Genius Bar told me its physically impossible to go back to an earlier operating system once you've upgraded. I told him that not only have I heard all about it on the internet, but the computer store I work at has been rolling back iPhone OS's for multiple angry customers all that week. He said "no, its impossible." This ****** me off that he would imply that I was lying or just that confused.

The [thank god] helpful people at AppleCare told me yes, its possible, but it WILL void your warranty. That is the problem. They need to offer a rollback option. They maintain ownership of my phone and decide what works best for me.

Vincent, I think I found the big reason Apple doesn't want people to go back. and sorry for thinking it was strictly ego.

Its MONEY !!!!

iOS 3.1.3 does NOT have the oh so wonderful iSpam (also known as iAd; only Apple could make spam seem cool)

Strangely, the feature set in iOS 4, when on a 3G is very little. No multitasking, no backgrounds, and other limits. But I bet iAds works perfectly
So other then newer apps requiring it, not much a compelling reason to upgrade (folders would be nice and the LLOONNGG over due playlist manipulation)

I can see a judge saying the go-back as legal and non warranty voiding.
(just because you sign a contract doesn't make it legally binding. A judge can overturn it if deemed unfair)

Have I voided my warranty by never upgrading? Don't think so since iTunes asks me if I want to upgrade and offers a don't ever ask again' option.

Sep 25, 2010 2:09 PM in response to MudShark

So if you don't want to update then don't update and live with the consequences of your choice and don't go on about it. If you choose to update, likewise.

We've updated both ours and so have all of our friends, all without on-going problems, so others who have problems must look to themselves about what they're doing or have done differently, perhaps?

iAds is an item to assist Apps developers to make money (particularly those who develop 'free' Apps) out of controlled advertising, not Apple, so what's so bad about it working perfectly?

Again, as I've said already, I find it unbelievable that the significance of the 'hacking' issue hasn't been grasped/understood by the 'must downgrade to 3.1.3' brigade - unless of course the 'must downgrade to 3.1.3' brigade are associated with the hackers themselves, perhaps?

I can never understand this gibberish. Because not everyone has had a smooth experience with the update doesn't mean that they are doing something different. What? Do some people not have their device oriented in the right direction when they updated? It's a simple process that is automated. If it doesn't work the same for every device don't jump to conclusions that the user has done something wrong.

Cliff,

Thats the prob with the typical Fan-Boy response. Apple does everything perfect, so if there is a glitch, the onus is on the user for screwing up installing an official OS on an official product using official install tool.

But hey, lets take this a bit further.......

Apple prides itself (and typically rightfully so, But there is nothing simple about the iPhoney) on making this easy for the users.
So, some to toss on 4.x on their 3Gs.
For some it works great (all the power to them and Apple, great job and congrats!)

Other have issues and problems. No prob, just a simple (what Apple prides themselves on; simple and stable) undo.
Oh wait! Can't do that! Void your warranty! (voided a warranty by putting on an official OS? LOL! )

Sep 26, 2010 7:32 AM in response to MudShark

That's the trouble with the typical ney-sayer's response: trash anything positive that tries to assist if it is on the ball and is in danger of helping anyone who can read and follow instructions.

But hey, let's take it a bit further.....

From DIRECT PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
1) Reading the manual helps (although 90% of family and friends admit to never doing so UNTIL they have a problem and it's suggested AGAIN that they do so - 'Oh, so it works THAT way? I never knew THAT before!')....
2) Issues arise from the small-print associated with 'legacy', and untested 'legacy' comes from un-updated 3rd-party Apps....
3) Following instructions (about USB 2.0, cables, iTunes versions, etc) helps....
4) Nothing 'Apple' has ever caused a problem if 1, 2 and 3 are understood, accepted and applied completely....(unless there is a genuine hardware problem which can be fixed under warranty anyway)....

😉

I ONLY agree with not sticking with 3.1.3 IF there was an official way to go back if problems arise that are unacceptable to the users. Its THEIR phone isn't it?

Apple is about the most option less (for customizing) company I've dealt with. Apple is very much like Henry Ford; "You can have the Model T in any color you like, as long as its black."

Sep 26, 2010 9:49 AM in response to Geoff Wales

You are right Geoff. *STICK WITH 3.1.3.*

I too am very disappointed with Apple's failure to solve this. But I am not going to get hysterical and disproportionately dumb about it. My iPhone is the best phone out there, except for the new one, and I'll be getting one of those when I get the chance.

I don't know about some people but I bought my phone when I took out my contract. I own it even though I have payments to go.

*Anyone with a brain can downgrade. If you chose not to then stop whining about it.*
