3G: v4.1 is still not a fix ?

Hi guys,

I have just come back after a week and checked the forums. I can see that 4.1 is still not a fix for the 3G. Even those who have some success with it report only 85-90% recover back to the speed we had with 3.1.3.

Unfortunately not enough people who have gone to 4.1 have come back and reported their experience now that a week has passed .. has it slowed way down as 4.0.1 did ?

I downgraded back to 3.1.3 a couple of months ago after my 3G slowed to a crawl despite every possible fix being tried.

*From the evidence here 3.1.3 is the limit for the 3G phone.*

Comments ?

Strangely-enough there is a little thing called 'progress' where some people try to improve things for others while some people try to make them worse.

Apple has been improving things while hackers have been making them worse and 3.1.3 is a significant vehicle for those who want to make things worse through hacking, wouldn't you say? Why stay with 3.1.3 when there is true progress with 4.1? 4.2 is on the way, but what do the hackers offer to those who are on 3.1.3? More grief?

Good for you. Why you feel driven on this mission to rid the world of 3.1.3 I don't know. PDF exploits are a less than minuscule threat to those of us who only visit mainstream and regular sites on our iPhones.

We have seen many people burnt by Apple over this series of upgrade disasters, and I am still seeing complaints of some apps crashing, random freezes and slowdowns, problems with picture thumbnails and orientation, to name a few.

Do I want to take that risk? No.

Well Cliff and Geoff,

I guess neither (and myself included) of you have 1/2 a brain. (yes I'm being sarcastic)

I need my phone to work when needed. I run a business and can't afford a part time phone. Yes it works for some, others no. Just ain't gonna risk it for the few features in it that work on a 3G.
I'm not gambling on Apple's possible ability to make 4.x work on 3G. After 3 rounds, looks like they are close, but still not there.

I just find it odd that Apple can't get it right. The control freak that they are, they control the OS and the hardware, so it should be easy to test. The poor Android and windoze phones is a different story.

My 3g is faster with 4.1 than with 4.0 and 4.0.1, but still has problems. It's really evident when using the map, for example. It can take 10 seconds or longer for it to react to a key stroke. For example, I just opened Maps and it was on the Directions page which is where I left it a few days ago. I clicked on "route" and it took 17 seconds to respond.

Same with using the camera. It just took a full seven seconds for it to "open" the shutter.

Safari is very slow too. If I click in the URL field it can take 3-4 seconds to respond (by popping up the keyboard). 3-4 seconds??? Why? What is it doing?

Bad News: my iPhone 3G very soon became slow again after upgrading to iOS4.1 and I spent a couple of weeks trying to find a way of getting rid if my iPhone only 6 months into a 2 year contract. However, I eventually 'bit the bullet' and used my laptop running 32bit Windows Vista to apply the free software available to downgrade to v3.1.2. Thank goodness I did! I had forgotten how good the phone had once been and I am so relieved to have got rid of iOS v4.
I was so pleased with myself and my new found ability to improve my phone that I then went on to explore other ways of improving my iPhone (see Wikipeadia) at no cost). I have been amazed at how well these things work but can't say much here on the official site! With its new features I would rather have my iPhone 3G than a new iPhone 4 because it will now do more than a iPhone 4!! If you are worried about using non Apple approved ways of solving the problems that Apple can't get round to bothering about then don't be. Just don't risk paying anyone because the genuine people don't charge.
