Battery short & FM radio goes off-tune ...

'wife v.pleased with her 'Nano - but ...

she says battery doesn't last more than several hours ...

and FM radio has to be re-tuned after a while, because it wanders-off & becomes hissy ... seems odd to me, because auto-hold (auto frequency control) has been standard on FM radios since the beginning of time !

anyone else have these issues ?

Just received my brand new nano two days ago.
so far after charging and syncing I have managed about 6 hours of continuous use listening to the radio while at work before the battery dies.

The first day I had disconnected the nano from the computer the night before so I thought it was due to this sleep mode battery use.
So the second day I left it connected all night and only unplugged it as I went out the door to work.
Still died around the 6 hour mark.

The Radio is solid on frequency though no problems there.

Regards

yep, six hours sounds about same as she's getting ... she says she listens to FM radio only some of the time, too, but wonders if it somehow stays on in the background ...

ISTR the 'Air had battery issues initially, but got better with time - wonder if same is going on here ?

in which case, one thought is that it might be a battery calibration issue, rather than a real issue, and that it will go away after a few cycles ...

she's also never used with the earpieces that came with it, only the better ones (Apple's own, that seal to the ear properly), so she also asked if there might be an impedance or other issue - they should be OK, I said, but ...

The radio eats significantly more battery than just playing music files. Try turning off Live Pause, that might save some battery because it must take processing power to digitize and store the data needed for Live Pause.

I don't think anyone has done any controlled tests to see just how long the battery lasts with the radio playing (and live pause on/off)

Hello again.
I have tried a wee test.. that is I charged up the nano and then last night put shuffle on plugged in the headphones that it came with and started it off. 12 hours later it is still going and the battery is showing about 10% so 12 hours and looks like it is not going to make the 24 hours.

I now will do the same with the headphones I prefer to use and see how that pans out.

If it is down to the radio using more power then that needs to be addressed. it would mean that the ipod is not fit for my purpose.

will also see if you can knock off that pause feature.. Thanks for that suggestion.

Hmm further to this ( edited for the 2nd time ) the battery level seems to drop considerably with the display on for a short time so what I thought was a good level actually fluctuates considerably.. I suppose as the screen goes to sleep quickly enough it shouldn't be a problem although I am beginning to seriously think I made a mistake buying this..
Apple I think you need to up the capacity of this battery to be able to meet your advertised up to 24 hours continuous use.

Gary

interesting - looks like SJ's 24hr life mention when he presented the new device was a bit ... what's the word ?

not the end of the world, of course, but these cultural differences (*) keep catching me out ...

(*) in the UK, we tend to talk-down & focus on the problems, in the US they tend to talk-up & focus on the successes ... either way, no problem, so long as one remembers to make appropriate allowances !

Have been on to the Apple support people in Australia and passed on my concerns.
I was asked to restore the machine through iTunes and test it again and get back to them.

The guy did say it is expected to last up to the 24 hours as advertised so there does seem to be an issue here.

Currently still syncing the tunes i got in my ancient library

will update later..

Enjoy and regards

Yeah I am on another thread about this subject also..

Stopping shouldn't be an issue. Basically, like most things like this, when you are home you plug it in, whether to a docking station or your computer, to sync it all and charge it up. When you leave home and are out and about you take it with you but they working on the precept that you will be back home or somewhere you can plug it back in for a few hours every day.

So the fact that you may have forgotten to stop the playback one way or the other isn't supposed to be an issue.

The issue is that no matter what, it is supposed to last during normal playback of some type be it radio or records or audio story book or whatever that allows it to dim the display it should run for up to 24 hours.

And I have had some agreement of that from the apple support guy.
so at 8:31PM I unplugged it from the computer having been on charge and restored for 8 hours now so should be well charged up. Started the radio and lets see if if is still running when I go to bed and when i wake up. I will not even look at the screen so no excuse for flattening the battery just listen to see if sound is still coming out of the supplied headphones.

Gary

Gary, volume level is another variable to consider for your testing. A couple different pubs have tested the nano 6G and reported the 24-hour figure (for music playback) to be accurate. But I don't recall specifics of their testing methods.

Apple's Tech Specs specify "Up to 24 hours of music playback when fully charged" FM is definitely a different animal.

Good luck.

Yes I totally agree with the volume level issue.. should have mentioned it but the volume level is about 1/4 to a 1/3 on the slider level.. in fact the test last night was purely radio only touched from a pure factory restore and play scenario. I didn't touch anything bar plugging in the supplied headphones and tuning the radio and then put it down.

Well 20:31 start and first low battery warning (I think as i didn't have the phones on all the time)was 01:08 in the morning.. so 4 and a half hours.. eeek..

Fully charged again overnight. Little plug icon on the battery indicator. So on charge from about 1:15 to 7:20.. checked the volume level as prompted and off it goes again. so a 7:30.

Douglas I discussed this with the Apple rep on the phone and he basically agreed that the radio should be micro amps and definitely not any more significant than reading the memory to retrieve the song data. To be totally honest I actually think that FM radio reception is so small an issue, that it should actually last even longer than the music playback. Less processor time as all the work is done transmitting it. receiving it doesn't need the processor as long as you are not playing with the displays etc..

Anyhow more testing.
This is a bloody shame as the machine looks great and is nice and small so tucks away lovely.. I don't want this hassle. I just want it to plug and play. This is a headache.

Gary
