OS X 10.4.11 gone nuts?

Hi Everybody!
I always have some problem with my iMac starting some months ago; this is the latest one and it's very annoying and really bad.

It all started with a problem with Bluetooth Setup Assistant which got to the point where everything in my OS started going wrong; BDAqua suggested using Applejack [(see this thread)|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2510383&tstart=0] which I did but, the same problems persist.

This is what happens:

Rebooted after applejack; flash of gray screen becomes black and stays black on for 3-6 seconds, then folder with question mark, then normal boot. This happens every time whether booting up or rebooting, either from applejack or not.
On an earlier reboot becasue I was not able to continue writing an e-mail; it was completely stalled, two alerts:
"Startup Items Security without proper security settings."
"/Library/Startupitems/" (can't remember what item it was)
"/Library/Startupitems/RetroRun"
Clicked both to be fixed; rebooted; folder with question mark first, then normal boot, again
Rebooted invoking Applejack (this was the 4th time I did it.)
I noticed that while Applejack is repairing permissions there is a line saying "All supporting Services are not loaded."
Rebooted; see first paragraph..
Beachball while Bluetooth Setup Assistant was loading, this happens in all volumes.
Help does not open an item in the Help Support articles list.
Bluetooth is set to open at login, but it stays in the background, it must be called up with Command+tab; this never happened before.
Command+spacebar to invoke spotlight would not work.
Beachball when clicking a textedit file to open it.
Beachball when opening spotlight.
Beachball when opening Safari.
Beachball after booting.
Beachball again when opening any application or file.
In other words, Beachball all over!

Also:
Trash is selected in Finder prefs to empty without warning; its behavior has changed and I get an alert "Items in trash will be deleted permanently. Do you want to proceed?" (it happened in safe mode, is it OK?)
Verdana font doesn't show in safe mode, is it OK?
Bluetooth mouse connection is lost (this happens too often.)

I have done an A&I some months ago because there were some glitches in the way the OS performed. Whoever has done an A&I knows that everything you have to do after the reinstallation is not only a pain in the neck, but it also is quite time consuming.

Now I wonder whether I need to do it again so as to be able to solve the problem, or the problem lies somewhere else (hardware malfunction? or something else?)

This last question comes up to me because none of the above seem to happen when booting from the clone FW HD.

I have not cloned the internal ever since the problems I've listed above started and don't plan on cloning it until the issue is resolved as both external FW HD's are not malfunctioning.

I do not include console logs with this post as they are basically the same already reported on the Bluetooth Setup Assistant (see above) and, mainly, because I am working from the clone FW HD and would have to go back and forth from the external to the internal.

I'll appreciate any and all the help I'm I'll get from you guys.

Thanks and regards.

Hi again, it's starting to sound like a Hardware problem.
Boot off your original G5 Install Disk while holding down Option/alt key to select AHT, then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

Hi again BD,

I've run the Apple Extended Hardware Test and its report says: +"Apple Extended Hardware Test completed 09/18/2010: all tests passed. No HW problems have been detected. If you continue to experience problems, review the Troublehooting materials that accompanied your computer, or log in at applecare.com/support, etc."+
The troublehooting paragraphs in the iMac manual do not address any of the problems I experience.

I rebooted the computer after the test. The screen flashed gray, then became black and stayed black for 3 seconds; a folder with a question mark appeared for a short time before booting normally. This still happens every time at boot, up just like before the HD test.

Also, when I rebooted after the hardware test test holding down the option key to select the drive I wanted to boot from (the clone) the option did not show.

Beachball after reboot, then beachball whenever opening a file, an application, or a link on an e-mail window directing to a website address.

New problems:
I open an info window of a file in a finder window and when I close the info, the finder window also closes.

With various finder windows open, closing one closes all others.

Practically, all other problems still persist.

One thing that keeps me wondering why it happens is, both the keyboard (Logitech diNovo Edge/bluetooth) and the mouse (Logitech Cordless Optical Travel Mouse/bluetooth) even though they both are shown in System Prefs/Bluetooth as "favorites" Bluetooth fails to recognize them when I open Bluetooth Setup Assistant because either one or the other is disconnected which, as I said, happens often.

This is what I've done:
I've created a large disk image in the clone and copied everything I have on the internal MacIntosh HD —other than applications— I don't want to lose onto it.

This is what I would do to try and solve the problem:
I would do an erase and install of Mac OS X 10.4 on the internal MacIntosh HD from the original installation DVD's; upgrade the system to Mac OS X 10.4.11, reinstall all applications from their CD's, and copy back what I have on the disk image onto the internal.

Do you think this method is right?

Thank you so much, regards.

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

BD,

Why not an Erase & Install (even though it is not painless) as I have all the information I need for Users & Settings, and all my files, pics, music, etc., on the disk image I've created on the clone? I have not included on it any application, nor anything other than what I've created and/or downloaded for further use.

My question relates to the fact that whatever may be wrong on the OS to be replaced would still be accessible to the computer from the Archive's Previous System.

Thank you, regards.

If you're certain you have everything you need backed up, thatb mught be the way to go.

Actually, the OS ignores all the Previous System folders they're just there safety.

I'm 99.9% certain I have everything I need, one can never be 100% sure.
Nevertheless, even though my last A&I has not been successful —apparently from what I experienced as related [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2510383&tstart=0]— I'll try A&I again since you say the OS ignores all the Previous System folders.
Will keep you posted, thank a lot.

BD
I've done an Archive & Install on Sep 21 and the result was beachball country again!
This is what happened:

• boot is fast but there's beachball
• beachball with spotlight
• beachball at shut down
• beachball when opening and closing safari
• beachball within an open page in safari
• beachball at 2nd restart after software update
• beachball when clicking on the apple menu
• beachball when clicking on spotlight
• beachball wiith bluetooth setup assistant at 2nd restart after software update
• bluetooth setup assistant has to force quit, not responding; happens always
• bluetooth connection lost
• mouse & keyboard not found, same as before
photoshop: images do not open either when double clicking their icons or dropping them onto dock; the issue persisted, I had to reinstall the application. You said "Actually, the OS ignores all the Previous System folders they're just there safety.", but my old photoshop preferences worked just as they did before even though I had trashed the application with AppCleaner (which removes all files related to an application) before re-installing it (I'm not complaining about this as it saved me a lot of time; it is only a comment.)
• double clicking icons of all other apps opens their files OK
• entourage opened totally blank as if used for the first time, I've lost all that was there. Used the archived Identity to recover entourage database, messages, addressbook, and calendar but it did not show all that I had backed up (another MS trick?)

I don't include any log the with this post so as not to crowd it; please tell me whether you want to read any.
Thanks again, regards.

Might be time to try an erase & Install though.

That's exactly what I've said on my post of Sep 19, 2010
It wou.d have saved me 4 ±10-hour days 😟

I thought we could find & fix the problem easier. 😟

I see you have something from unsanity. installed! What is it?

Besides a fresh Install, the only thing I can think of pulling the Airport card or removing the Airport kexts...

http://hintsforums.macworld.com/archive/index.php/t-79549.html

Or it's a Logic Board problem...

Unsanity (From Wikipedia):
+Unsanity is a Mac OS X shareware software developer founded in May 2000, notable for coining the term "haxie".+
+Their most popular software includes ShapeShifter and WindowShade, utilising their freeware Application Enhancer module. On February 24, 2008, beta versions of some of their major products were introduced which were compatible with Leopard, bringing Leopard compatibility to their product line for the first time after a long wait of over three months since the introduction of Leopard.+
+The introduction of Leopard initially lead to negative publicity for Unsanity, as many users with old versions of Application Enhancer installed suffered system crashes upon upgrading to Leopard. Many also believe that Apple actively tries to prevent third party applications from modifying the user interface in order to maintain control over the consistency of the product's appearance, and that Leopard may have finally achieved this goal.+

I don't have nor ever had anything installed that Unsanity makes: no ShapeShifter, no WindowShade, and no Application Enhancer module. I don't know how it came to be showing in the log; could it be that I hit upon it while surfing Version Tracker on the web?

Besides a fresh Install, the only thing I can think of pulling the Airport card or removing the Airport kexts...

Where are these Airport kexts? Spotlight only gives me these two search results: "AirPort Setup Assistant," "AirPort Admin Utility," and "Network" but I don't use AirPort, which as I understand it, it allows a Mac to connect to the Internet without a modem (I may be totally mistaken, though.)

Or it's a Logic Board problem...

If it is a logic board problem it means probably having to replace it which I don't want to do right now since it means not having a computer for some time.
I have a hunch that the whole problem I'm facing now has to do with the Bluetooth Setup Assistant thread I started back in July [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2510383&tstart=0] where you suggested upping the RAM to the maximum my iMac G5 would tak (2GB) which I did without getting rid of the issue: Bluetooth Setup Assistant continued doing what it did before, beachball shows everywhere, every time, etc.

I had purchased Kingston 2GB PC3200 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMM for Select iMac G5, Power Mac G5 Models as MacConnection's Customer Care Center personnel I'd spoken with confirmed the RAM I wanted to buy was indicated for my computer.

Before going any further, what I'll do is have Kingston verify the RAM I've purchased and replace it if it is defective.

In the meantime, I'll go back to an iMac G5 with only 1 GB RAM until I get the replacement RAM; I'll do an E&I, and then spend another 2 or 3 ±10-hour days getting everything in its place. This way I'll know that I always see a beachball because there is only 1GB RAM.

_I need to know whether to do an E&I before or after installing the original 1 GB RAM._

Thank you.
