Changing the initial "cosmos" screen

This app, Loginox, does what you want a lot easier than using terminal commands.

The login background picture is /System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg
Move this photo somewhere else and copy the photo you want to this folder and name it DefaultDesktop.jpg.

Did you follow the instructions located on the loginox site? How did you "copy" the iphoto picture? You were supposed to launch loginox then drag the desired image to the New Login Image space in the loginox window, no copying involved. Then click on "Set new Login Image button. No renaming files involved. No ensuring image is in correct folder, etc. Just click and drag.
