How to open old (archived) “.mbox” mailboxes?

How to open archived “.mbox” mailboxes?

I have saved (archived ) old mailbox from old version of Apple’s Mail. The mailboxes have the suffix .mbox and can not be opened with my current Mail 4.2 -the message is that they are created with an older version of Mail (which I don’t have anymore).
As a result I cann't open these old mailboxes… they are practically lost.

The questions - How to archive these .mbox mailboxes in such a way that I can open them regardless of the version of Mail I use
or
to be able to open them with , say, any word processing pogram like TextEdit?

Thanks for any step by step, practical tips!

Newer versions of Mail provide the ability to read the archived mailboxes from older versions via the Import function. This is the only way to use Mail since a conversion must take place for such older mailbox folders.

Those with the suffix .mbox can be read with TextEdit, unless they are too large for TextEdit to fit within its use of RAM.

You have a different alias and identity than the original poster -- does this mean you registered a second time?
