macbook pro core i7 high res anti-glare screen garbled graphics
My two month old macbook pro consistently (once every day or two) produces a garbled up screen after using it for a few hours. The only way to resolve this is to restart the computer. I've talked with apple support and have gone into the store for help and so far everyone is clueless and offer no real advice. I can't take a screenshot on the machine once this occurs, the picture just comes up blank, but I did take pictures with my cellphone.
I have seen people talk about filing a bug report. Other than using the "report bugs to Apple" within Safari, how do you go about filing a report and actually getting a case number?
Just wanted to chime in to say that I'm experiencing the same apparently Flash-related problems in Safari 5.0.2 and Flash 10.1 when using the integrated graphics. MacBook Pro 15" i7, standard glossy display. I've not experienced any problems when using Firefox. I'll try to call Apple to report it.
I got the same issue with a first gen MacPro (with an Nvidia 7300 GT graphic card) so I wouldn't blame macbooks graphic cards.
I'm having these glitches since the last snow leopard upgrade, so maybe the latest graphic drivers are the problem. but I also upgraded the flash plugin those days... so I can't tell exactly.
you can file a bug report using the apple feedback form, or if you're a developer use bugreport.apple.com. I'm having problems with this site though as it only intermittently will let me log in, so its slowing the progress of getting any info to apple.
the last response i got back from them was:
"Please run with integrated graphics on only one RAM chip, and then the other, and let us know if it's specific to only one of the two chips.".
I assume they mean switching DIMM's physically, however I have been unable to log back into the system to clarify. To be honest I'm not too keen on taking apart my reasonably new macbook to identify their software bug (although this response implies its a hardware problem, but then why only safari??).
on the plus side, firefox + flash seems to be working great. havent had a problem since!
I have had a similar problem with a new 7i where the screen blinked white. Returned to apple store to be given a new 7i and then with in a month or so had a similar problem start with the newest laptop this time it was a black and white pattern. you can view a screen shot here:
when I would restart the problem would go away for a while then return. Took it to the apple store when it was cycling alot and the saw the problem. They ran test and started up for different OS and could not repeat the problem. Tested the graphics card and said it was fine. The advise to reinstall OS but not ready to as I have a lot of programs which need to be deauthorized and then reauthorized. Days of work so hoping someone comes up with a fix.
also, you might try downloading the flash uninstaller, uninstall flash, then download the installer and re-install. Repair Permissions via Disk Utility, restart and then see what happens. I have been reading issues here and there about flash being a possible suspect in this case.
Hey, just wanted to say I have a 17" i7 too and it exhibits this behavior as well.
It mostly happens in Safari and Xcode. I have been using the discrete GPU now for about a day and that does seem to fix the problem, but at great cost to battery life (obviously not ideal).

The thing is, mine does it running DVD Player even when neither Safari nor Firefox nor the Flash player is running (as confirmed by watching for the process in activity monitor) is running - this strongly suggests that it is
not Flash.
the problem appears to be in the graphics implementation of safari which playing flash content exacerbates. once the corruption is introduced into memory it persists, requiring neither safari to be running or flash content to be playing to observe the glitch.
as the discrete graphics has its own discrete memory chips, it is not subject to the corruption error (n.b. i have not done any testing to conclusively say it will not occur with the discrete gpu).
the easiest way to flush the glitch out of graphics memory is to perform a complete restart. if the problem still occurs with dvd player or other software after a complete restart prior to using safari+flash on the intel chipset, then i will consider your hypothesis.
