I'm seeing now on the support site that the only speaker the iphone 4S has is on the right. The confusion is...
my old 3g and 3gs both had a speaker on the left.
Nope, all iPhones, all models, 1 speaker, 1 microphone.
Stedman
I have an iPhone 4, and it does in fact have 2 speakers.
The top speaker is the same one used when making phone calls.
The bottom has 2 grills, one houses a microphone, the other a speaker.
I cannot speak to the 3GS with authority, but I believe it has a similar arrangement.
Incidentally, the iPhone 4 also has a second microphone, it's the small hole next to the earphone port.
I assume this is used to record some kind of stereo sound, or maybe in voice memo mode, but I'm not 100% sure.
In this instance I an referring to the bottom edge of the iPhone.
I have two openings on the phone, one on each side of the charging port.
I have two iphone 4's sitting in front of me.
I play music on each phone. If I put my thumb on top of the right speaker on one phone, I cannot hear anuything anymore.. if I put my thumb over the right speaker on my other phone, I CAN hear music from the left speaker.
I must conclude that I have two speakers - one on each side of the charging port.
Both phones came from VZW, not Apple stores.
The like to the specs from Billyboy takes me to 4s, not 4

UPDATE:
After taking the cases off - BOTH phones behave the same.
I cover one speaker on the bottom and other speaker is dead on both phones.
Sorry theMezz, try this link instead -

You will note the Specs clearly indicate a Speaker in the right grill, Microphone in the left.
Any music you may hear through the left would be residual sound resonating through the phone.
Cheers, Billyboy
You are correct
Thank you for the info
Incidentally, the 3GS was the configured in mirror-image. Speaker on the left and microphone on the right, as per the following:
It drives me crazy that they chose the right side. If you're right handed and hold the phone like I do, your right pinky finger curls under to support the phone from sliding our of your hand. Doing this covers up the speaker and it buzzes and vibrates heavily. Feels like the speaker will explode due to pressure. Wish tweak that somehow.
"The other speaker is dead" ... you should say "The other one is a microphone, not a speaker at all."
So the iPhone 4S does not have two speakers
I was going to change my iPhone 4 because of this problem but really the bottom left speaker is the microphone right is a speaker
It does have two, the other is near the headphone jack and records ambient noises so the iphone can filter them out of your phonecall.
its believed that on newer models of the iphone on the left is actually a microphone and on the right is the one and only speaker. it made me curious too🙂
