Capacity display wrong in iTunes10

I had a similar problem with my photos. After being unable to find an answer in these forums I solved the problem myself. I used a utility "iphone explorer" to access all the files on my iphone . media>photodata brings you to a directory of photo/video folders folders. At the bottom are 3 files (PLIST and SQLITE files). I deleted all 3, ejected and restarted itunes. iTunes immediately reset the capacity bar and rebuilt my photo libraries. My capacity bar went from 5.3GBs to .21GBs, nice!

I understand music is different, so this fix might not work for your music capacity gauge. You can try and explore the phone further to find similar PLIST and SQLITE files if this doesn't work for you.

Back everything up first and try at your own risk!

Although not completely, this brought my "other" capacity down from 6GB to 1.86GB. I think there's something here. I might look into other category "plists / sqlite " files as well.

This is clearly a product issue (not a bug- a serious issue) Apple- Please fix!!! I have spent to much time (and money) on these devices for an error like this to be occurring. Highly annoying! The repeated suggestion to "restore" is not realistic. Even considering the restore as standard troubleshooting is ridiculous. Also the confusing manner in which to "correctly" restore an IPhone (choose restore from drop down as opposed to big restore button on the Summary Tab) is highly unorthodox. As a pc user, and I usually expect vague behavior like this from Apple products, but come ON! I really love the products (even the mac OS), but this kind of user interface flaw just screams "pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"

No this is not it.

I have a total of 8 something GB of music on my 16 GB iPhone 4 - always have. My total music library in iTunes is 11GB. Now suddenly iTunes is telling me that I am 7GB over. So somehow, I am basically trying to double the size of my iPhone music library, over night, which would be 3 or 4 GB more than all the music that I have.

Besides, I go to the cloud to see if I can upload music from there, and I was able to upload 133 songs that I had recently purchased, no problem. But I can't even upload a new playlist with existing music to my iPhone now. I am very ******, and sick and tired of every single update totally screwing up my phone.

This worked for me: I unchecked all of my music, and it synced fine. Then I slowly started adding music back. This is a real PITA, and Apple better fix it, but at least I'm not getting the error message. But now I only have about 1/5th of the songs that I want on my phone, and I'm not sure at what point I'll get the message again.

One year on and yes, it's still happening... mine is on the iPad2 32 GB. I've seen the free capacity reading on iTunes fluctuate by as much as 2 GB between successive syncs even without any new apps being added or deleted on either Mac or iPad. But I recently 'lost' 5 GB of free storage after I transferred about 3 MB of photos to the iPad. Subsequently deleted the photos but the storage reading hasn't reverted to previous figure.

Mac user here with iTunes 10 and an iPhone4. Same problem.

APPLE PLEASE FIX.

I have the same problem. I deleted all music files on the phone. It still thinks there are 25 songs and 1.6GB of music. Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, Stedman1... you're answering the wrong question.

Perfectly normal: 32G hard drive does not mean you actually have 32G of available space.

Issue in this thread: 29.78G Total available space. iTunes shows 10G used by music, but there is not actually that much music on the iPod/iPhone.

In my situation, I have exactly ONE photo on my iPhone. However, iTunes shows that there is 5G of photos on my iPhone. The problem there is that even though there is only 1 photo (equalling 1MB), my iPhone thinks there is 5G of images taking up that space. So, it does not allow me to use 4.99G additional space taken by photos that do not exist.

Love Apple products, but this needs to be fixed.

Used iExplorer as suggested by tomsawesomto delete the files. Memory is clean now.

I am having a similar issue but only if I sync devices over wi-fi. I have 12 GB of audio in my itunes liabrary and I sync all 12GB to my devices (iphone, ipad, ipod...) If I sync devices via wi-fi the itunes summary for the device jumps up to 15GB of audio, showing a false capacity level (I only have 12 GB in itunes total). If I sync via wire direct with my Mac the audio capacity goes back to the appropriate 12GB...

Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this for an ipod nano generation 4/5? I have read all of the replies to this and tried everything appropriate but nothing seems to work, I also looked into the iExplorer (previosly iphone explorer) but is only compatable with ipads, iphones and ipod touch.

I started having this problem after transferring my itunes to a new laptop. On itunes my capacity is showing as 5GB of photos, eventhough I don't have any, and my ipod shows 5GB of other data??!!

Please apple sort this out as all my itunes will let me do is sync a third of my songs, and I don't pay for them to only be allowed to listen to some of them!!

I think (I might be wrong) but that seems like a whole other issue. That would remain constant in how it is being displayed, even if it may seem "incorrect" at first glance. If that were the problem, removing (unchecking) a song or app would actually correpond with the slider at the bottom, making it have more free space (even if the computer reads it weirdly), but I and a few others have the problem of it actually making less free space.
