Macbook Pro LCD Screen Works Sometimes / On/Off

For several months my (late 2007, 15 in) macbook pro screen was not working at all. I took it to apple at one point and they said I would need to replace my screen which would cost at least $400 or $600 I can't remember how much. I just knew it was too much.

Then recently I found out that my model had the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor and Apple found out those had a problem in a number of those computers so they are supporting it by replacing the mother board.

So... I got my new mother board recently but the screen was STILL not coming on at all after the repair. One conclusion was obvious I needed a new screen or just use the computer as a desktop with an external monitor which is what I've been doing.

So now, here's the rub:

My SCREEN MAGICALLY HAS COME BACK ON just last night and this morning... it was working and then Poof it went off again.... now again it's magically come back on.

When working there isn't any streaks or anything that appears damaged on the screen at all. My guess is that there is some cable or some connector point that is loose and somehow like a short makes it go on and off.

Now, part of what has been going on since yesterday is that I just replaced my hard drive so I've had the cover of the computer off... somehow I did something to they keyboard so I'm having to use an USB keyboard right now (might have to replace that too). So... somehow my taking off the cover and putting it back on a few times must have touched something that is making it work again.

What could it be? Any ideas? I'd be grateful for any advice that would keep me from having to try buying a new screen as I understand I have to replace the whole piece.

Thanks,
phil

All right well I've confirmed that the LCD was shipped and I'm supposed to get it tomorrow and I have a repair guy that is going to work 'with me' to change out the screen tomorrow night.

I'll let you know how it goes. I'm pretty confident in our prospects thought!

Phil

PS: Because it didn't fix the problem after I swapped out the LVDS display cable, I'm considering put the old cable back in.

Heyyyyyy S.U., great news! I've got my new LCD replaced and the screen is working PERFECTLY!

The guy who helped me with the install (Eric) suggested we just leave the new LVDS cable that we replaced in there unless we saw a problem after testing with the screen. I'll keep the back up cable.

But hey, this was quite a journey for me to finally get the new LCD and make sure I got the right model without it costing an arm and a leg. It seems most were being sold for about $200 and folks doing installations usually charge at least $100. Eric only charged me $25 each time as I did most of the work having all the screws out and put most of it back together after he did the more complicated screen swapping out part of the job.

Anyway, thanks again for all your advice and well wishes. It helped me hold the focus to make it happen.

All the best,
Phil

Will do. I LOVE my macbook pro! I do want to eventually get a new 13.3 Unibody with 4 gig Ram & the faster bus speed. BTW, any thoughts on buying a Refrub model online? Are they just as dependable as other new computers? They are under warranty and there's always Apple Care right?

In anycase, I am happy quite happy with my MGP & could never imagine going back to PC!

Cheers,
Phil

From what I hear, the refurbs are a great deal, as Apple repairs any problem and then still offers 3 year Applecare on them. I gather that when a new model comes out, the previous models are often sold as refurbs or on clearance. If you are in no particular hurry for a 13", you can always wait until a new model comes out, and then check the clearance/refurb section for great deals on the previous model.

I too love my MBP--just treated it to a new hard drive and a new battery. Probably will be looking at a unibody some day, but not ready to give up my Santa Rosa just yet. Still, those new machines are spectacular!

Cheers to you too and enjoy your MBP!
