iPhone & iPad fail to connect to hotspots that redirect for authentication
iPad with latest iOS updates.
iPhone 3Gs with latest iOS updates.
History: I've had the phone for a little over a year. At one hotel which redirects the user to an authentication page after connecting to the wifi, the process works the first time... you are able to enter the user ID and password, after which you have full Internet access.
If you disconnect from the wireless network and return later, the system will tell the phone to redirect to the auto page, however it will never actually happen and you are never able to access the Internet on that system again. Resetting the network settings does not work. So again, it will work the first time, and never again.
Current Situation: I am visiting a med school for work which uses a similar system. Both the iPad and iPhone connected yesterday, both displaying the redirected authentication page correctly and then connecting to the Internet.
After leaving campus yesterday and returning this morning, the aforementioned problem is reproduced exactly and on both devices. Neither display the authentication page no matter how many things you reset in the network settings (an unacceptable fix anyway, even if it did work.)
This wireless network hosts hundreds of students, a huge portion a of which use Macbooks without issue. Upon discussing this with the IT administrator, he said that iPod Touch users have the same problem here.
Summary: It would appear that several iOS devices are unable to reconnect to a wifi hotspot that redirects for authentication after having successfully done so once. There is no problem with the system since every laptop and Blackberry on campus reconnects to it daily without issue.
