On regular, but seemingly random basis I am thrown out of the iPad mail program while deleting mail. When I reenter the deleted messages are still there sometimes I have to try numerous times before I can delete. I have set up mail on my iPad to empty trashes daily. I do not want to delete the. From the server. I have gone in and manually deleted messages in the trashes and sometimes that helps. I have tried restarting my iPad. My software is up to date. I probably get 50-100 messages per day

I'm having the same issue. Mail crashes repeatedly and unexpectedly. Messages delete and then mail crashes. When I reopen Mail, the messages are there again. I have reset my ipad as new, deleted and re-added the mail account. The application is unusable at this time. It's < 30 days old......Is anyone else having this issue?

I have the same issue. The message won't delete and mail crashes. After a few attempts, the message does delete but I'm still in the dark on the cause and a solution, if one's been provided.

I just got a new ipad, and found that I had the same problem. As I had also purchased applecare, I called them and got the following solution: reset the ipad. You do this by pressing down on the home button the same time as the on button, and hold them down until you see the apple logo.

I did this, and, at least for now, the problem has gone away. Only time will tell if it is a permanent solution, as it was andom before. If it isn't, and I find another solution, I'll repost.

Let me join the chorus, because I have the same issue here (iPad 16 GB Wifi, 4.2.1, IMAP). Mail app crashes every time when I try to delete an email tapping on the trash can button. On the other hand, when I delete an email by swiping and tapping the delete button in the sidebar, it works flawlessly. This strange behaviour must have started only a short while ago, I don't remember it did that a few days ago.

Would be interesting to know if we all use the latest SW update (4.2.1)? IMAP or POP account? Does it happen on Wifi or on 3G or both?

In my case it's an iPad 16 GB Wifi only, 4.2.1, IMAP.

Initial troubleshooting steps for misbehavior in the iPad or installed apps can be found on and around p. 170 of your User's Guide. Once you've worked through those without success, it's probably time to talk to Apple or the developers.

I have the same problem. Seems to have started after upgrading to iOS 4, but I'm not for certain. I reset using the start/sleep button combo but it still crashes. I would appreciate any other ideas.

I have the exact same problem. My mail program crashes when I try and delete a message. Happens almost every time. I also have problems with Safari crashing at random times. Must be a big bug in iOS 4.2.1

I just started having this same issue today. It happens now every time I try to delete a message by tapping the trash can. Every message causes this crash when I try to delete it using the trash can. But if I delete a message out of the message list on the left (hit "Edit", select the messages to delete and then hit "Delete"), deletion works fine. Only when I try to delete individual messages using the Trash Can does this crash happen.

I have and have had the same problem for some time now. Trying to delete emails has become an obnoxious problem.
Rebooting gives temporary relief, but it appears again after a few days.
I hope someone can offer a suggestion.

This just started with me within the last few days. I have reset it as well with no luck. My email is now also not deleting or only occasionally deleting. I also tried to empty the trash as the previous posts directed, but it wont actually go away, it shows that it deleted it, but then when you open it again, its all still there. It also seems like it started after the newest software update. Is Apple working on this??

There are many approaches besides rebooting. See following boilerplate ...

+A more or less standard sequence of steps is laid out in your User's Guide which you should follow in those cases when either your iPad or an installed app isn't behaving as it should. They sort of mirror 'The Three R's (Restart, Reset, & Restore)' used for iPod troubleshooting, with a few extra iPad-specific things added in to the list.+

+These generic steps are laid out and explained on or about p. 170 of your User's Guide, in the Tips & Troubleshooting section. The directions there will start you out from the quickest and easiest first step, which will often be all you need to do, all the way to the atomic blast fix of totally restoring the iOS and all contents in your iPad. You should also notice that that same section contains a wealth of more specific recommendations for specific apps or situations, and will prove well worth a going-over..+

+You can call AppleCare, and they will probably have you do the same things. Or, you can take it I to a Genius Bar, and they will also go through the same steps. Needless to say, if you work through the whole process without being able to correct your problem, then you've pretty much shot your bolt and will have to start talking to Apple or the app developers for a resolution.+

It seems to be a bug in the latest version of Mail which randomly manifests itself. Personally I don't think any amount of resetting or sacrificing virgins is going to work.

Try deleting from the list of messages rather than using the trash can--it's worked for some posters

Hopefully you allowed iTunes to send bug reports back to Apple so they're aware of this problem.

Apple seems pretty reluctant to issue bug fix versions of iOS so we're probably stuck until 4.3

Yes there appears to be a problem with the trash can delete. The swipe and edit delete work just fine. A couple weeks ago I had to restore my Ipad 3 times in one week. A rest would not fix the crashing email. I could not even get into the email app. without a restore. I have not had any additional crashes because I do not use the trash can delete. It has to be a bug in 4.2.1. I hope Apple get this fix in the next update.
