Actually the solution to 'your' problem was to reset the router. That is not my problem. My problem is more generally: Apple TV ***** (for home sharing anyway).
The bottom line. Apple TV is a piece of junk with respect to home sharing. Mine works, doesn't work. I reboot everything, turn off sharing, turn back on, etc. Then it will work again. For a little while. Then it stops.
This has been my experience since the latest iTunes update. It seems if I don't use the ATV2 for more than a day or so home sharing disables itself. It doesn't really because according to iTunes it's still anabled. I have to disable it and renable it, then ATV2 works again. This is a huge inconveince for me because my ATV2 and hosting comuter are on different floors of my house. I'm thinking about jailbreaking the thing and playing around with it. Or investing in a Boxee.
+1 here too.
Had Apple TV 2 for about a year, on the same router, no problems. Best 99 quid I ever spent.
Until recently. Totally unuseable now.
I could try the multitude of possible solutions suggested here. But why should I? It worked, and now it doesn't, like for many other people out there.
The only changes in my previously flawless setup are recent Apple software updates. So this is Apple's fault. End of.
I now have a 99 quid coaster.
It's frustrating, having to explain to my kids why they can't watch their Pixar movies anymore. Oh, the irony...
As a loyal Apple evangelist of over 20 years, this is appalling.
It's just a crappy piece of equipment for streaming content from a home computer. Goes about it all wrong by forcing iTunes in between.
My solution: I'm going to dump my Apple TV and get a WD Live TV. It's awesome. My WD Live devices are great network devices. They simply work. It's just as inexpensive as Apple TV and is superior, for my needs.
I talked to Apple TV support just a few days ago. For one thing, they said that since my apple tv box was 30 ft from my router, I should hard wire it to my router and that helped. Not sure how my apple tv downstairs is doing. haven't tried it yet.
Also, you should upgrade to the new version of the software, which I think is version 5.0. It's been much better, but it's only been since yesterday that I upgraded it.
hope this helps.
Mine's been hardwired the whole time and the 30 ft thing is a copout anyway.
I like my solution better. I just bought the WD TV Live. It's just a better device for my needs. Apple just got this one wrong.
It is almost a year to the date that I purchased this product with various updates still not enabling my device to work so i have booked an appointment with the Genius'sat Apple and if they fail to come up with a solution I hope they will refund me my money as this product clearly isn't fit for purpose.
Q.E.D.
Thanks darkusltd.
As has been said, if we are forced to get a refund and look elsewhere, this is a real shame. When ATVs work (and they are, believe it or not, capable of working sometimes...) they are the most elegant and useable solution out there. But when they don't they are a 99 quid coaster.
Seems such a shame when Apple could just listen to these fora and code in a quick fix.
Why aren't they listening?
Interestingly, Apple have been careful to make NO MENTION OF HOME SHARING WHATSOEVER on the UK store's new Apple TV3 details.
They have obviously quietly dropped promoting this feature in light of the fact that they have screwed it up, big time.
Thanks a bunch, Apple. Game over.
Not impressed.
i have a 3rd generation Apple TV ... it is now connected to my router via an ethernet cable ... IT STILL CANNOT FIND MY COMPUTER ... THAT IS LESS THAN 3 FEET AWAY ... APPLE TV IS A ******* PIECE OF ****
Same here. Suddenly, since a couple of days my ATV2 stopped working properly. Either it doesn't find my library at all (the home screen looks like there is a library, but when I click on it it tells me it's not there), or it doesn't connect to the home share (home screen tells me to open iTunes on the computer).
The only thing I've done since before when it was working, was upgrade to Moutain Lion on the iMac which hosts iTunes.
The only WAY TO MAKE IT WORK is to unplug the ATV2, and replug it in. Then it works again. I noticed btw there's no way to turn the ATV off from the remote in the same way as when you unplug it (there it reboots completely, you get the apple logo and everything).
Anyhow, something must have happened with the home sharing feature with Mountain Lion.
i know this is probably a bit late as its over a year ago you were all getting this problem! iv had the same issues recently and i found the problem! go to Itunes Store>View Account and Sign In (even if it says Sign Out above view account) for some reason after id been to View account and entered my password my library was then visible again via Apple TV!! Hope this Helps some people out its been bugging me for 2 months
I've had Apple TV for about a month. Had some problems connecting, here and there at first. Then I upgraded my wireless router this week, and I couldn't connect my iTunes library, via Home Sharing, to ATV or my iPhone remote app. (Although it possibly could had been the recent updates to both ATV and iTunes, who knows.) But after spending a few days trying to figure this out I doscovered Ilngoc's repair here in this forum, and it worked perfectly! I'm going to post again so anyone else having this issue can hopefully find it easier......

It is not IPv6 from your ISP. It is IPv6 on your PC which is running iTune for Home Share which is the problem. I had the exact same problem. I reinstalled iTune and it worked for 5-10 minutes and failed. But after I have disabled IPv6 on my PC's network controller, everything started working perfectly since then without a hitch. (See attached image for where IPv6 is disabled on the PC)
This solved it for me! Thank you so much for posting.
Problem came back for me to :( but this has solved it :-D legend!
