Apple TV 2 and my Sony HDTV, no HDCP? But my PS3 works fine...

I'm disappointed to find that both my Roku box and PS3 work fine on my Sony KDF-E42A10 HDTV with HDMI however my new Apple TV V2 does not.

What is going on here? How come my brand new Apple TV does not work?

I am getting the following ERROR: This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection. This content requires HDCP for playback.

My Apple TV 2 is plugged directly into the HDTV.

RESOLVED - OK EVERYONE - Just got my new HDMI cables in. Everything now works fine. Not all HDMI cables are HDCP Compiant.

Here are ones that work great and are DIRT CHEAP!

Just to recap - Ensure your TV is HDCP compliant - Make sure your receiver (if the HDMI is running through it) is compliant - If they are swap out your cables.

My new apple tv gets the same error message when I try to stream NetFlix or rented HD movies from itunes. I can stream content from my itunes library. I've tried it on all three of my high def monitors (Samsung LN52A550P3F, Vizio GV42L, and Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP) and none of them work. I've also tried 4 different HDMI cables, one of them I purchased brand new yesterday and the package says that it is compatible with everything on earth...didn't work. After all of that failed I did a reset on the ATV which also did not solve the problem. I also tried some of the solutions that I've read in the forums (turn everything off and unplug for 5 minutes, reverse the HDMI cables so that the end you had plugged into the TV is now plugged into the ATV, latest firmware updates on TV) and none of those suggested solutions have worked.

The strange thing is that my NetFlix streaming starts for about 4 seconds and then freezes. That's when the HDCP error shows up. I'm thinking that the apple tv is the problem and that there needs to be a firmware/OS update or something like that. The apple technician that I spoke to last night wanted all the info on the TV's that I had and HDMI cable part numbers. He specifically said he was going to pass the info along to the engineers.

I really like the interface and ease of use with this ATV so I'm hoping that there is a solution on the way.

Okay, I'm completely fed up with this issue.

- been working with Apple TV tier 3,
- I bought not one, but TWO of the cables Funmunke recommeded,
- gone through two different ATV V2 units,
- four other HDMI cables "guaranteed to be HDCP compliant",
- used both HDMI ports on my Samsung LN-S3241D HDCP supported TV,
- reversed the HDMI cable ends (per www.tuaw.com forum recommended fix),
- unplugged/re-plugged everything,
- run ATV Restore and Reset many times,
- burned incense offerings and held all-night chant rituals to Fulgora, goddess of lightning,

... and still cannot play more than the first 5 seconds of any Netflix movie. This is nonsense.
I'm taking it back to the Apple Store this afternoon for a refund.

I have had almost identical experience as Zippymidget above.

I have a new Sony Bravia Kdl55hx800. Initially, Netflix on Apple Tv worked fine for a few days. Then, it stopped working, and I got the HDCP error. I've replaced cables, done shutoffs, nothing works. Oddly, Apple TV works with same cables on other Panasonic TV.

It seems like there is a problem in the HDMI handshake between the Sony Tv and the Apple TV, but nothing works. As noted above, everything else on Apple TV works fine besides NetFlix.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a very similar situation but knew it couldn't just be the HDMI cable. (How can it work sometimes and not others.)

What I found was the HDMI connection into the AppleTV wasn't so snug. Being a stiffer HDMI cable, depending where I placed the AppleTV it caused torque on the connection and moved it just enough to cause the error. Looking at the back it LOOKED out, but just the slight twist caused the problems.

My Apple TV 2 worked fine with our Toshiba 34HF84 for several weeks.

Now any paid content, Netflix or iTunes fails to play with the HDCP/HDMI error.

I've tried replacing the HDMI cable, powering off TV, powering off ATV, performing a restore, etc. Obviously the HDCP handshake is failing. I guess the next step is to try to swap ATV units at the store.

Once again copy protection screws the legitimate consumer.

Just installed ATV with brand new HDMI cable (SONY TV) and began testing out Netflix. It worked great for 3 randomly selected flicks but then then experienced what looks like common problem. Tried to load more flicks and got HDCP requirement message every time. This is all happening in one session. The next day I tried again and this time I could not load anything. Unplugged TV and ATV, restarted and all is well. I don't believe for a minute that this problem will not be coming back. Apple needs to address this!

1.I set up my ATV2 wih Netflix streaming and it worked great for weeks.

2.Apple forced a firware/software upgrade, and I have had a problem with the HDCP error ever since.

3.Nothing else on my system was changed.

This is obviously an Apple/Software issue. APPLE – FIX IT PLEASE AND DON’T LEAVE YOUR CUSTOMERS HANGING. This is just sloppy business practice, like the iPhone antenna, and you’re not winning any customers by ignoring this issue.
