Mail not showing new messages in inbox

One day, I noticed that my mail.app wasn't retrieving or showing me my new messages. I have a mobileme account, which pushed and showed me new emails on my iphone but they're not showing up in my mail application. I have 3 mail accounts (mobilme, exchange, and gmail) and none are syncing but all say that they are online. There is no alert ( ! ) symbol next to any account.

Every time I try to check for new mail the Mail Activity in the bottom left corner shows 57 of 57 incoming emails (and keeps rising every day) but nothing is showing up in my inbox. It also makes the no-new-messages sound.

I control clicked each mail account on the left side panel and clicked Get Info. It showed me ALL of my new messages that it wasn't showing in my inbox but I couldn't open them and if I clicked on them, it only gave me the option to Remove From Server. So I assume it's getting all my new mail but it's now showing me in my inbox or anywhere else I can find that I have new unread messages. Also, there are no little red numbers indicated the number of unread messages on my Mail icon.

I've looked in other forums but nothing seems to be working. I tried to uncheck the SSL box and made sure the port was 110 but that just made things worse and took my exchange account offline so I undid that. Right now, SSL is checked and the port reads 995. The authentication is NTLM. I have a feeling that it might not be those connection settings that are wrong because I didn't change anything before the problem presented itself. I also tried the connection doctor (Mail>Window>Connection Doctor) and it said everything is connecting just fine.

Mail has been doing this for a month now! Please help!!!

an here is what I did to "solve" my problem:

ℹ copy ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to Desktop

(ii) enter Timemachine and take a copy of ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist that worked

(iii) after starting Mail, it will tell you that the Library has to be fixed - which solved the problem for me

Voilà!

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.

In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:

I'm having the same problem and it's impacting my ability to response to time sensitive emails, regarding an international MBA program I am attending.

Does anyone know of a solution for this problem? Am I not receiving emails, or are they just not displaying? How can I make them display?

Thanks in advance.

summer14, In case you haven't resolved this yet.

polzbert's solustion is excellent, assuming you have a backup drive using Time Machine. However, did you try rebuilding the inbox? If not, here's how:

Select the mail box that's giving you trouble in the left pane of Apple Mail. Then choose "rebuild" iunder the Mailbox Menu Item. This has resolved countless mailbox glitches for me in the past.

Thank you! It worked. Now if someone could help me figure out why my mail stopped working in the first place. I have spent many hours over the last two weeks trying to get my email back! I keep getting error messages that indicate the problems with the SSL, my username and password, ad nauseum. I have used the mail preferences, connection doctor, anything that can be done. I suspect that the problem exists between yahoo and Mac. Thoughts?

Hi! I'm having a similar situation as most on this list. Happened out of nowhere yesterday. I'm not receiving new messages (from Yahoo) on my Apple Mail eventhough the status bar shows that it's downloading the incoming messages -- and yet no new messages appear. I too have the major concern of wiping out the emails that are in my inbox since all are not saved on the Yahoo server -- when I looked up the Rebuild Mailbox help article it said that rebuilding the mailbox would clear out the messages and redownload them from the mail server. On my mail inbox I have messages from 2011 whereas on the server I only have messages from Nov 2012, and need to keep those emails from 2011. Is there a solution that would help me avoid clearing out my inbox? Although I'm pretty tech-savvy, clearly spelled out steps are hugely helpful! Thanks!

Apple this is just plain BS. Your Mail app doesn't show all emails. Your app has a bug. This thread has been going for over 3 years. You've released many updates and a major new OS X update in Mavericks. The problem persists and it's not acceptable. We rely on email for business. One missed email, or one responsed to too late can have a huge impact on peoples lives. I don't think it's too much to ask that we get to see all our emails. We must assume you do not wish to fix this. This happened to me twice yesterday and enough is enough.

For anyone still unsure if this is a bug or not a bug, see my screen caps of my webmail and Mac Mail views. The red items are missing in Mac Mail. Perhaps if I tickle Mail just so, or slap it round the chops whislt giving it a kiss, the missing emails might show themsleves. But I have no time for such pandering.

So where to from here? I'll be looking in earnest for another email app solution asap.

Dear a12c4,

There have been many glitches since the move to iCoud. I'm not a fan either. I was much happier with Mobile Me and I'm deeply distressed at the loss of iDisk and some other great features.

Recently my Iphone refused to retrieve my email and I had to do some major tweaking to both my MacBook (running Lion) and my Original iPhone still running IOS 3.1.3 which is no longer supported.

Things to check:

  1. The new incoming mail server for iCloud has changed (at least in my case). It is: p03.imap.mail.com
  2. The SMTP server appears to be the same: smtp.me.com
  3. New Apple ID email addresses must now include "me.com." If you're still using an old "mac.com" address in some of your settimgs, that can cause some issues as well.
  4. Also, Apple requires a new password format with 8 characters, one cap, numbers and all that crap. So - if you have changed you Apple ID on the main iCloud server/account, be sure that you change it in Apple Mail and all other apps requiring your Apple ID password, ie. iPhoto, iTunes, the App Store, etc.
  5. Another note - you MUST upgrade to Lion, or the newest IOS on iPhone/iPad before June 30th if you want to keep any "me.com/mac.com" email addresses.

*****, doesn't it?
