Apple TV (2nd Gen) screensaver photo shuffle

Received my 2nd gen ATV yesterday, and successfully setup home sharing with iTunes on my mac, along with photo sharing. I really like the photo screensaver capability of the ATV, and set it up to use my entire iPhoto library with "Floating". However, every time the screensaver starts it shows a bunch of pictures from 10 years ago (the oldest stuff in my iPhoto library). I don't mind seeing these pictures, but I'd prefer to get the photos in random order and not "oldest first". I can't seem to find a "photo shuffle" preference, am I missing something?

Apple this is so very annoying. Just bought Apple TV 3 and cant believe is now worse than the original apple tv which my brother bought 3 years ago. Seriously rubbish. This is one of the main reasons I got ATV as its great to stick on when people come round to show my pictures. I have about 10000 photos and I keep seeing the same ones every couple of minutes. ive had to turn off screensaver it annoys me so much - considering returning it - SORT IT OUT!!!!

Sorry, haven't been following this thread for awhile.

It does seem like they made some improvements in this awhile back. I've noticed that the set of photos does seem to be much more random. They do tend to repeat but as I mentioned before I think this is a limitation of the Apple TV's storage space.

On the plus side every once in awhile it does seem to go out to the computer and get another set of images to display. Not sure when it does this. Probably after playing a movie or something has flushed out it's cache of images.

All and all it's not bad now. At least for a screensaver. For a really long slideshow with a lot of images you could always generate one in iPhoto or Aperature and save it as a movie.

Sorry Haggardly, this simply isn't true. I can't even begin to understand how you could assess that based on your findings.

Yes, 8GB of storage is of course a limit, and most of that obviously needs to be free in order to buffer streaming content for playback.

Still, the limit of approximately 100 images that are obviosly compressed before they are cached on the ATV would not even take up more space than 50 MB maximum ⚠. Apple could do way better than that and actually solve the problem at hand.

I think I may know what is happening here. If you set your Photos up in the "computers" screen you have to wait until all of the photos download to the apple tv box. If you have the time out set for your screen saver to say 5 minutes it will switch over to displaying the photos that are in the buffer before finishing the download. It appears to me that it doesn't download photos while the screensaver is active. My photos can take 45 minutes to download so if the screensaver kicks in after 5 minutes I will only get a subset of the photos in the library. The best way to override this is to set the screensaver timeout to "never", go to computers, photos and download your library. Once your library has been downloaded (this could take some time) go back to the screensaver menu and reset the timeout for your screensaver to your preference say 5 minutes. Seems to work for me...

The two best features of the ATV are airplay mirroring (which will be expanded to the Mac OSX with Mountain Lion, yay!!) and the photo viewing while playing music. With photo veiwing it is disfunctional that the same pictures show up over and over again. What a wonderful feature to be able to view my 12,000 pictures on my big screen TV. What a waste of a feature if the photos are not random. I am going to start a petition to fix this seamingly simple problem.
