Apple TV (2nd Gen) screensaver photo shuffle

Received my 2nd gen ATV yesterday, and successfully setup home sharing with iTunes on my mac, along with photo sharing. I really like the photo screensaver capability of the ATV, and set it up to use my entire iPhoto library with "Floating". However, every time the screensaver starts it shows a bunch of pictures from 10 years ago (the oldest stuff in my iPhoto library). I don't mind seeing these pictures, but I'd prefer to get the photos in random order and not "oldest first". I can't seem to find a "photo shuffle" preference, am I missing something?

I've also seen searching for a work-around for this issue for nearly 2 years and am disappointed Apple hasn't chosen to fix it yet. In the meantime, I am considering moving my Apple TV1 back into play, getting rid of the Apple TV2 and using a Blu-Ray or Roku for Netflix. It might ridiculous but being able to view all of my photos in the screensaver is the #1 feature that I want out of Apple TV.

I think using a Apple TV Gen 1 would be the best approach. I don't think it offers all of the slideshow annimations of the Gen 2 or 3, but it at least shows all the photos.

You'd asked abut third-party firmware giving additional features for the screensaver. I don't have any first-hand expreience, but from everything I've read, it makes no improvements or changes to the screensaver and there are no apps either.

An Apple TV Gen 1 is probably your best option if the screensaver showing all photos in the library is your objective. If you have one, give it a try and let us know what slideshow annimation options it has in comparison to later generations.

I have the same issues, my work around is to do the following to "mix up" the photos. We have over 24,000 photos, but when we have seen the current set being shown I do the following. 1. On the AppleTV go to Settings, 2. Screen Saver, 3. Select Photos, 4. Select from "Computers" your shared computer, 5. Under "Choose Photos" I select Photos, not Events or Faces. 6. At this point the file loading symbol comes up and it brings up new random photos.

I listen to the AppleTV Radio Stations through all these steps without a problem. We have the photos up for about 30 minutes before we decide to take a few moments to switch them up. It is a hassle, but seems to bring back very old, middle and current photos after taking these actions.

I've been following this thread for a while, and it's finally started working for me. I recently moved my iTunes "server" (or whatever you want to call it) to an old iMac with Snow Leopard. After installing the latest iTunes 11.x, there was an option in the File menu to "Choose photos to share with Apple TV". I hit our photo directory (it's not even an iPhoto library) and after a few minutes it showed ~26000 photos available. Now in AppleTV (version 3), it seems to be doing a pretty good job of randomizing them. At least it's not just choosing about 50 photos like before.

Another tip: I had actually given up on this issue after screwing with it for way too long, and I set the ATV screensaver to use my iCloud photo stream. That seems to work perfectly always. So, if you actually upload all your photos to iCloud, just do that.

Okay, nevermind. It's still not working. However, instead of about 50 photos, it's locked on to about 500. It's so annoying to see some ****** photo I took of something I sold on eBay about eight years ago on repeat.

The iMac that's hosting my photos is hard wired to a gigabit local network and is always on. I don't understand why the AppleTV cannot fetch some new photos every time is turns the screen saver on. I can spare the bandwidth.

Did this used to work? Ever? This would be such an amazing feature if my library of 26,000 photos weren't reduced to about 500.

Gawd.
